A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/9\/10\/22662320\/epic-apple-ruling-injunction-judge-court-app-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 ruling<\/a> forced Apple to allow developers of App Store apps to link to outside payments, and Epic has now filed a motion asking Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers to enforce her original order. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Epic says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/1\/16\/24040881\/apple-outside-payments-app-store-policies-iphone-ipad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple\u2019s updated developer policy<\/a> that still reserves 27 percent of outside payments (or 12 percent for small developers) for Apple itself is still unjustified. Epic argues these fees are \u201cessentially the same\u201d as those the company charges for using its payments system. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Christian Owens, who founded payments processor Paddle, and Benjamin Simon, the founder behind the Down Dog fitness apps for iOS, agreed in declarations also filed by Epic. Owens called the choice offered by Apple \u201cillusory,\u201d while Simon said his company, Yoga Buddhi Co., would still have to charge more for the iOS version than the web version of its subscriptions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Epic also says that Apple requires developers to use a specific \u201cPlain Button Style,\u201d which Epic says \u201cis not a button at all\u201d and violates the injunction on Apple forbidding developers from steering \u2014 that is, pointing customers to alternative payment \u201cbuttons, external links, or other calls to action.\u201d It says that Apple disallowing multi-platform apps like <em>Minecraft <\/em>from pointing to outside payments violates the judge\u2019s order as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Epic spokesperson Natalie Mu\u00f1oz told <em>The Verge<\/em> in an email that Apple\u2019s new policies prohibit \u201cthe kind of steering Down Dog used in its Android apps\u201d \u2014\u00a0on Android, Down Dog is able to point its users to its website for cheaper subscriptions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The judge\u2019s original injunction didn\u2019t specifically mention steering, so<strong> <\/strong>Epic\u2019s request seems to hinge on how she interprets her own order and whether steering is implicitly included.<strong> <\/strong>Some close observers, at least, think Epic has a good legal argument.
