Like in those cases, Meta says it will pull news from its platforms in the state if the bill becomes law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Meta spokesperson Jamie Radice told <em>The Verge<\/em> via email that news isn\u2019t the reason most people visit Facebook and Instagram, and if the law passes, \u201cwe will be forced to make the same business decision that we made in Canada to end the availability of news in Illinois<em>.\u201d <\/em>We asked Google for comment, but it did not respond by press time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Under the bill, tech platforms like Meta and Google would be required to \u201ctrack and record, on a monthly basis,\u201d how many times their platforms have linked to, displayed, or otherwise presented Illinois residents any work from online publishers that have met the bill\u2019s reporting requirements. The companies would then have 10 days from the end of the month to pay a \u201cjournalism usage fee\u201d to each of those publishers equal to 1 percent of their advertising revenue for the period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The bill calls local journalism \u201ckey to sustaining civic society,\u201d saying it gives information \u201cat a deeper level that national outlets cannot match,\u201d but notes that \u201cover the past 10 years, newspaper advertising has decreased 66%, and newsroom staff has declined 44%.\u201d It says it\u2019s \u201ccritical\u201d that they be \u201cjustly compensated for the content they create and distribute.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">We reached out to the bill\u2019s sponsor Illinois Senator Steve Stadelman\u2019s (D) for comment on Meta\u2019s statement, but a spokesperson said he was not immediately available. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Stadelman said in a News \/ Media Alliance release that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmediaalliance.org\/release-news-media-alliance-applauds-illinois-senator-steve-stadelman-journalism-preservation-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he sponsored the bill because<\/a> \u201cthe future of local journalism is in danger,\u201d calling it essential for Illinois residents to have access to it.
