Today, the company <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lgnewsroom.com\/2024\/03\/lg-makes-strategic-investment-in-bear-robotics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">confirmed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a $60 million investment in <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bearrobotics.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bear Robotics<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the California startup that makes artificial intelligence-powered server robots for restaurants and other venues \u2014 autonomous tray towers on wheels that are meant to replace waiters. With the investment, LG Electronics becomes Bear\u2019s largest shareholder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bear\u2019s last fundraise in 2022 valued the company at just over $490 million post-money, per <a href=\"https:\/\/my.pitchbook.com\/profile\/185087-98\/company\/profile#insights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PitchBook<\/a> data. It\u2019s not clear what the valuation is for this latest investment but <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/11\/08\/robotics-funding-saw-another-dip-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the last year has not been a great one<\/a> for startups in the space.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the current vogue for all things AI, and the general advances that are coming with that, are giving robotics players a fillip \u2014 see <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/arVvdSMK9e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday\u2019s Covariant news<\/a>, for another example. Still, it\u2019s not clear what Bear hopes to tackle next with the basic trays-on-wheels form factor that its adopted for its flagship Servi robots.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve contacted Bear and LG for further comment.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bear investment comes nearly two months after LG CEO William Cho hinted at LG\u2019s interest in equity investments in robotics specializing in delivery and logistics at CES 2024 in January: the company is putting money where its mouth is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/04\/05\/lgs-exit-from-the-smartphone-market-comes-as-no-surprise\/#:~:text=In%20the%20end%2C%20it%20seems,%2C%20indeed%2C%20a%20competitive%20one.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LG shut down its struggling mobile business<\/a>\u00a0globally in April 2021, the Korean electronics and appliance giant shifted its business focus to other growth areas, including smart homes, connected devices, the Internet of Things (IoT), electric vehicle (EV) components and robotics and artificial intelligence platforms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs the service robot market enters a period of growth, this equity investment will significantly contribute to securing a \u2018Winning competitive edge\u2019 for the company,\u201d Lee Sam-soo, chief strategy officer at LG Electronics said in its statement. \u201cFrom a mid-to long-term perspective, we will seek to develop our robot business into a new growth engine, exploring various opportunities through the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as Embodied AI and robotic manipulation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This investment is not LG\u2019s first robotic business. The Korean electronics company has been researching and developing software and hardware in robotics. In 2017, LG deployed guide robots at South Korea\u2019s largest airport, Incheon International Airport, per its statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bear was founded in 2017 by John Ha, a former Google software engineer turned restaurateur, who witnessed how challenging things could get. Ha\u2019s firsthand experience with the challenges of running a restaurant inspired him to develop serving robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/01\/22\/bear-robotics-a-company-making-robot-waiters-just-raised-a-32-million-round-led-by-softbank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The SoftBank backed startup<\/a> operates its indoor delivery robots in the U.S., South Korea, and Japan. These serving robots, designed to help deliver food to restaurant customers, have been successfully deployed in various settings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cJust as Android revolutionized the smartphone era, standardized open platforms are essential for the activation of the robot market,\u201d\u00a0 Ha said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/29\/metas-zuckerberg-woos-big-tech-in-asia-to-double-down-on-ai-chips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LG CEO\u00a0 had a meeting with Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg<\/a> to discuss the two companies\u2019 potential strategic collaboration on extended reality (XR) device development.
