Whoopi Goldberg has slammed critics for branding Anne Hathaway\u2019s character \u2018disgusting\u2019 for dating a younger man in her upcoming film \u2018The Idea of You\u2019<\/p>\n
\u2018The Color Purple\u2019 actress, 68, hit out after a trailer for the film revealed Anne is playing a 41-year-old mom who dates a 29-year-old pop star (played by Nicholas Galitzine) in the movie.<\/p>\n
Whoopi blasted on \u2018The View\u2019 about a backlash to the plot from trolls: \u201cApparently, the Internet is divided on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome call the age gap disgusting, while others say they\u2019re here for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whoopi stressed the plot of the \u2018The Idea of You\u2019 is \u201cnot new\u201d and listed a string of celebrities who have younger partners in real life.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cWhat is the problem?! If you don\u2019t wanna see the movie, don\u2019t see the movie! Stop (moaning) about it!\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhoopi\u2019s co-hosts agreed with her, with Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines pointing out they are married to younger men.<\/p>\n
\nJoy, 81, who has been married Steve Janowitz, 79, since 2011, joked: \u201cI always have a younger guy.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cMy husband is 7 years younger than me. He drives at night, he does the heavy lifting, he\u2019s sharp as a tack!\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAlyssa Farah Griffin, 34, slammed trolls who called actress Anne a \u201ccougar\u201d, adding: \u201cI just refuse to accept that Anne Hathaway is capable of being a cougar, so I reject that outright, but it\u2019s also just such a double standard.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere are so many men who have dated women 20, 30 years younger, and no one bats an eye.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAnne\u2019s upcoming film is based on the bestselling book by Robinne Lee and sees her character Sol\u00e8ne meet her future younger lover at Coachella before their relationship quickly heats up.<\/p>\n
\nSol\u00e8ne is seen in the trailer asking him what \u201cpeople will say\u201d about it, to which he responds: \u201cI don\u2019t care what they say.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
