For the first time in decades, daytime TV is getting another soap opera.<\/p>\n

CBS Studios and the NAACP announced on Wednesday, March 6, that they are developing The Gates<\/em>, a new daytime drama about a wealthy Black family living in a posh, gated community. P&G Studio, a division of Procter & Gamble, will coproduce the series. P&G previously worked on As the World Turns<\/em>, Guiding Light<\/em> and Another World<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Gates<\/em> will be the network\u2019s first new soap opera since The Bold and the Beautiful<\/em> <\/a>premiered in 1987. It will also be the first new daytime soap on broadcast television \u2014 period \u2014 since Passions<\/em> debuted on NBC in 1999. The genre has declined in popularity over the last two decades, even more so recently as streaming has taken off, giving viewers more daytime options.<\/p>\n

Soap opera veteran Michele Val Jean<\/strong>, who has written over 2,000 episodes of daytime drama, will serve as script writer for the series. Her previous credits include General Hospital<\/em><\/a>, The Bold and the Beautiful<\/em> and Santa Barbara<\/em>. She also worked on daytime television\u2019s first-ever Black soap, Generations<\/em>, which ran from 1989 to 1991 on NBC.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tWhen soap opera stars leave their roles, it can be as shocking as their shows\u2019 plotlines. Alison Sweeney surprised longtime Days of Our Lives fans in 2014 when she announced she\u2019d be exiting the series after 21 years. \u201cI\u2019ve been on Days of Our Lives since I was 16 years old, and I have never [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sheila Ducksworth<\/strong>, CBS Studios\u2019 NAACP venture president, will co\u2013executive produce the series alongside Leon Russell<\/strong>, Derrick Johnson<\/strong> and Kimberly Doebereiner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Gates<\/em> will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective,\u201d Ducksworth said. \u201cThis series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television.\u201d<\/p>\n

CBS Studios and the NAACP struck a deal in 2020 to develop scripted and unscripted programs for TV and streaming. CBS Entertainment Group President George Cheeks<\/strong> said at the time, \u201cThere is no better partner than the NAACP \u2014 the preeminent civil rights organization in our country \u2014 to help us find, develop and tell these inclusive stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

That seems to be what The Gates<\/em>, the first show to emerge from the partnership, will try and accomplish on daytime TV.<\/p>\n

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos started dating shortly after playing love interests on All My Children in 1995. \u201cI auditioned him. They\u2019d been looking [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to develop this project with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime television, and the NAACP, whose enduring commitment to Black voices and artists is both powerful and inspiring,\u201d Ducksworth said.<\/p>\n
