Reba McEntire<\/strong><\/a>, appearing as a coach<\/a> on this season of The Voice<\/em><\/a>, got emotional after hearing a performance from former Kidz Bop singer William Alexander<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alexander performed Lizzy McAlpine<\/strong>\u2018s \u201cCeilings\u201d during the Tuesday, March 5, episode\u2019s blind auditions, prompting McEntire, 68, and Chance the Rapper<\/strong> to turn their chairs, indicating they\u2019d like him on their team.<\/p>\n

After the performance, Alexander said he sang the song in honor of his late grandfather, who died last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe always said that he believed in me, and it\u2019s just crazy being here now,\u201d Alexander told the judges.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Voice has been stunning viewers for years with amazing talent from across the United States, crowning 24 winners since it premiered in 2011. During season 19 of the NBC singing competition series, New York native Carter Rubin blew audiences away with his singing abilities and saw coach Gwen Stefani secure her first win. McEntire was impressed with the 16-year-old\u2019s poise, saying she struggles when trying to sing while thinking of her mother, Jacqueline, who died in 2020. McEntire has since said she almost quit singing<\/a> after her mother\u2019s death because she \u201calways sang for mama.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMama was the one that inspired us kids, taught us kids how to sing, took us to our singing gigs and was our biggest cheerleader,\u201d she said in an appearance on Today.<\/p>\n

She expanded on her feelings when talking to Alexander during Tuesday\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I sing a song and I\u2019m thinking about my mama, I start gasping and then I can\u2019t sing anymore,\u201d she said, imitating herself gasping for effect.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAfter impressing the coaches \u2014 and the viewers at home \u2014 several contestants on The Voice have exited the competition series over the years. In October 2018, Cody Ray Raymond was the first singer to abruptly leave the NBC hit since its premiere in 2011. The season 15 competitor wowed the star-studded coaching panel with [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

When she asked how Alexander was able to pull it off, he said, \u201cI just pictured him hearing this and seeing me do this. It just made me feel so proud to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re gonna have somebody with you all the time,\u201d McEntire added, as she began choking up. \u201cI thought you did a great job, your voice is a beautiful gift and I\u2019d love to have you on my team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexander, a first-generation American from Staten Island, had his family by his side during his audition.<\/p>\n

While all the judges were complimentary, Chance, 30, told Alexander, \u201cYou have great control, and just a really unique tone. I really don\u2019t think there\u2019s anybody in the competition that sounds anything like you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alexander ultimately chose McEntire as his coach, saying he was going with his gut.<\/p>\n
