The talented Mr. Ripley is back, but this time, he\u2019s just Ripley.<\/p>\n

Andrew Scott<\/strong><\/a> is taking on the role of author Patricia Highsmith<\/strong>\u2019s famed fictional grifter Tom Ripley in the upcoming Netflix limited series, aptly named Ripley<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always weird finding out what people see in you, particularly when it\u2019s a character like Ripley,\u201d Scott joked to Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a> in February 2024 while discussing his casting as the sociopathic con artist. \u201cI was very determined not to diagnose him with anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Scott didn\u2019t want to put a name on Ripley\u2019s wrongdoings, many have over the years. Highsmith published her first crime novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/em>, introducing Ripley to readers in 1955, and released four thereafter. There have been various film and TV adaptations of the iconic character over the years. Some might say he\u2019s, simply put, a serial killer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what happens with these famous characters is that people have real strong ideas of who they are,\u201d Scott further explained in his Vanity Fair<\/em> interview. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to drown him in any preconceived ideas. Words like sociopath or psychopath or pseudo-sexual killer, all those things are just unhelpful to me. Even though he\u2019s not necessarily always a reliable hero, he\u2019s certainly the hero of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Will \u2018Ripley\u2019 Be About?<\/h3>\n

This adaptation refers to Ripley as \u201ca grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York\u201d who \u201cis hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home,\u201d according to Netflix\u2019s official description. \u201cTom\u2019s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Netflix adaptation of the project was inspired by the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/em><\/a>, which starred Matt Damon<\/strong>, Gwyneth Paltrow<\/strong> and Jude Law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, a Vanity Fair profile surrounding the show noted that the Netflix adaptation \u201cstands apart from previous adaptations thanks to its episodic format.\u201d<\/p>\n
