Is that right?\u201d pondered Noodles, referring to the band\u2019s 1992 record. \u201cStill, that was punk rock standards. The mid-\u201990s saw hip-hop transform, regaining some of its edge and danger. The West Coast had already made a claim as king of the genre in the early \u201990s, prompting New [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Holland agreed. \u201cYeah, we really jumped a lot [in numbers],\u201d he told <em>Us<\/em>. \u201cSo we felt like we had some momentum, which was exciting. We thought there was really a ceiling, which was, at that time, Bad Religion. They sold whatever it was, maybe 100,000, maybe 200,000 even? And that was just insane. But nothing even close to what might be considered a punk band or a pop-punk band had broken at that point. So we really thought that that was as high as it could go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Offspring - &quot;Come Out And Play&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1jOk8dk-qaU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Smash<\/em> went on to smash all expectations. In its first year, the album sold more than five million copies in the U.S. alone, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/the-offsprings-smash-the-little-punk-lp-that-defeated-the-majors-189742\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Four months after its release, the RIAA certified <em>Smash<\/em> both gold and platinum, the first record on indie label Epitaph to achieve that status (it went triple-platinum by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/stylish\/news\/5-ways-to-master-90s-fashion-trendvideo-w439480\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the end of 1994<\/a> and has since been certified six-times platinum.) By 2012, over 11 million copies of the album had been sold worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The album spawned three songs that became staples of MTV and alternative rock radio: the teenage alienation anthem of \u201cSelf-Esteem,\u201d the angst and anxiety-riddled \u201cGotta Get Away\u201d and the aforementioned \u201cCome Out and Play,\u201d a song documenting the gang and school violence Holland witnessed in East L.A. The signature line \u2014 \u201cYou gotta keep \u2018em separated\u201d \u2014 was sung by the band\u2019s friend <strong>Jason \u201cBlackball\u201d McLean.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the last song that we recorded for <em>Smash<\/em>, so it was almost an afterthought in a way,\u201d Holland told Us. \u201cAnd I had the idea for a voiceover basically because I knew that I couldn\u2019t pull off that kind of cholo voice. I had no idea where that was going to come from. So it was kind of thrown together, I suppose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And how do Holland and Noodles feel about their breakthrough single being almost an afterthought? \u201cIt\u2019s a good thing we did it,\u201d Holland said with a laugh. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t encourage the planning and preparation [we did] \u2014 \u2018just go in off the seat of your pants and maybe it\u2019ll all turn out.\u2019 But it is funny how things work like that sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued, \u201cYou\u2019ve heard that mantra that 90 percent of the work happens in the last 10 percent. Maybe there was something to that where we just got into that zone at the very end where it was so focused and so intense that we just kind of pulled it together.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-u5O7MDmfu\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Making <em>Smash<\/em> was not always so fortuitous. Holland and Noodles said that Epitaph had booked them 20 days to record the album \u2014 \u201cAnd it wasn\u2019t 20 consecutive days,\u201d they clarified. They had to call the studio to see if anyone was in, and if nobody was, \u201cwe would get it for half the price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole of it was very tight,\u201d recalled Holland. \u201c[20 days] wasn\u2019t very long, back in those days \u2014 very little money. We shared a guitar amp that we pooled our money for. So, just that fact that we pulled it off something that so unlikely is [incredible].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Offspring\u2019s <em>Smash<\/em> and Green Day\u2019s <em>Dookie<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/green-days-new-album-saviors-is-1-of-their-best-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released a month prior<\/a>) are credited with elevating punk into the mainstream, a momentum that continued throughout 1994 with landmark releases from Bad Religion (<em>Stranger Than Fiction<\/em>), Rancid (<em>Let\u2019s Go<\/em>), Jawbreaker (<em>24 Hour Revenge Therapy<\/em>) and more. Embarrassment,\u201d Holland admitted, while Noodles said that the band was left \u201cunsure\u201d about the whole experience. \u201cDo we deserve this?\u201d he said. \u201cIs this real? There was uncertainty, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holland added that the success resulted in The Offspring \u201cbeing looked at differently by your friends, peers, old fans, all that stuff. Festival season is usually characterized by surprise collaborations, major fashion moments and controversy, and 2024 will likely be no different. From Boston to L.A., dozens of different events [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The guilt resulted in The Offspring turning down a performance on <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em> at the height of their new success. \u201cIn hindsight, I wish we had done it,\u201d Holland confessed. \u201cAt the time, we really felt like we were just a garage band a few months before. We hadn\u2019t played a show bigger than 500 people. And to put us on a national live television show, we just thought it was probably going to be a disaster in terms of our performance. Maybe not? Maybe it would\u2019ve been OK, and maybe it just would\u2019ve captured the moment, but it just felt really uncomfortable to put ourselves up to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Noodles, that imposter syndrome still lingers, even four decades into the band\u2019s career. \u201cWe still have the saying to this day, \u2018we\u2019re almost like a real band,\u2019 and we certainly feel like that back then,\u201d he told Us. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to keep upping our game in order to deserve whatever success we\u2019ve got. And we still kind of feel like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Smash<\/em> was, at the time, the bestselling album ever released on an independent label (per<em> Rolling Stone<\/em>), but The Offspring\u2019s widespread success and popularity put them at odds with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/nofxs-fat-mike-on-final-tour-clearing-the-air-with-blink-182\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">punk community<\/a>. \u201cIf some guy\u2019s little sister likes your band, then forget it,\u201d Holland quipped. \u201cThere\u2019s a perception when a band becomes well-known that it\u2019s not cool with some people anymore. We fought that in terms of trying to stick to what we thought was right. We stayed on the independent label throughout the record cycle. We didn\u2019t do a lot of magazine [features] or covers. But at the end of the day, what can you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Offspring - &quot;Self Esteem&quot;\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Abrn8aVQ76Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Holland added that he and the band didn\u2019t want to overstate their struggles. \u201cMost of it\u2019s been great, for sure,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are always the negative voices. It was strange thinking, \u2018Here we are, having joined this punk band 10 years ago because we didn\u2019t fit in.\u2019 You join this punk community that you feel accepts you, and then all of a sudden, you get successful, and you get ostracized. That was a strange position to be in, and that did last a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The band mostly laughed off the times they failed the punk rock purity test. Noodles remembered how <em>Maximum RockNRoll,<\/em> the venerable publication known for its strict attitudes about what was punk (think <em>Pitchfork<\/em> before there was <em>Pitchfork<\/em>), gave <em>Smash<\/em> a good review when it first came out. \u201cAnd then we got on MTV and started selling copies of it, and all of a sudden, we became the hated capitalists,\u201d he joked. \u201cIt changed overnight, and it was ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holland cited another moment of \u201cthe change in perception,\u201d telling Us, \u201c[<em>Smash<\/em>] got reviewed in <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>, which was like, \u2018Oh my gosh, that\u2019s huge.\u2019 It didn\u2019t happen until four or five months after the record had broke. And they gave it three, so not terrible, not great. Three. A special pop-up exhibit will feature memorabilia and never-before-seen photos from famed photographer <strong>Lisa Johnson.<\/strong> Noodles will provide guided tours for fans, while bassist <strong>Todd Morse<\/strong> and guitarist <strong>Jonah Nimoy<\/strong> will guest DJ at the Triple Down Bar. I certainly did. So maybe some of the lyrics reflect that or just capture different angles. Maybe even funny angles, like \u2018Self Esteem,\u2018 is kind of laughing at not having self-esteem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the band\u2019s lasting success, Holland concluded, \u201cBut maybe it\u2019s just one of those times where we were definitely getting better, but [<em>Smash<\/em>] still was flawed enough that it made it sound real. Some of my favorite albums like Operation Ivy\u2019s [<em>Energy<\/em>] are certainly not professional records, but they have a real sense about them that makes you just love them because it feels real.
