It\u2019s a big deal, because the Oregon law would be the first to ban \u201cparts pairing,\u201d a practice where companies can keep you from using components (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/5\/21\/23079058\/apple-self-service-iphone-repair-kit-hands-on#:~:text=The%20single%20most%20frustrating%20part%20of%20this%20process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sometimes even <em>official<\/em> ones<\/a>) unless that company\u2019s software is satisfied that they belong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23910066\/right-to-repair-law-newsom-california-sb-244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California\u2019s right-to-repair law<\/a>, the Oregon bill also requires companies to make the same parts, tools, and repair documents available to any owners that it offers to authorized repair shops, and without charging any more for them. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">It doesn\u2019t specify a number of years that companies need to make those items available, though \u2014 California mandates seven years, while the Oregon bill suggests companies could simply stop producing them. It also comes with typical carveouts for video game consoles, medical devices, HVAC equipment, energy storage, various kinds of engines&#8230; and electric toothbrushes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Like California and Minnesota\u2019s laws, it wouldn\u2019t apply to phones sold before July 1st, 2021.
