In recent months, Nikki Haley<\/strong><\/a> has called Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a> \u201cunhinged<\/a>\u201d; implied he\u2019s a decrepit old fool<\/a>; blasted him for claiming the 2020 election was stolen<\/a>; expressed uncertainty that he\u2019d abide by the Constitution the next time around<\/a>; and proclaimed that the country is committing \u201csuicide<\/a>\u201d by voting for him. Given all that, you might think the former South Carolina governor would be emphatic in declaring that, in the very likely event Trump becomes the GOP nominee, she won\u2019t endorse his candidacy for office. But apparently, at this juncture, she\u2019s only comfortable suggesting as much\u2014and leaving the door open to back the guy.<\/p>\n Speaking on Meet the Press<\/em>\u00a0over the weekend, Haley told<\/a> host Kristen Welker<\/strong> that while she previously took the Republican National Committee pledge to support the eventual nominee, she no longer feels beholden to that promise because \u201cthe RNC is now not the same RNC; now it\u2019s Trump\u2019s daughter-in-law.\u201d (If you missed it, the ex-president effectively pushed out<\/a> RNC chair Ronna McDaniel,<\/strong> who is likely to be replaced<\/a> by North Carolina GOP chair Michael Whatley<\/strong>\u00a0and Eric Trump<\/strong>\u2019s wife, Lara.<\/strong>) Yet when pressed by Welker to confirm that she was saying she didn\u2019t believe she was \u201cbound by that pledge,\u201c Haley\u2019s response was an equivocal: \u201cNo, I think I\u2019ll make what decision I want to make, but that\u2019s not something I\u2019m thinking about.\u201d<\/p>\n This content can also be viewed on the site it originates<\/a> from.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Her answer was not dissimilar to the one she gave last month<\/a> while appearing on another network news program: \u201cI\u2019m running against him because I don\u2019t think he should be president. The last thing on my mind is who I\u2019m going to support. The only thing on my mind is how we\u2019re going to win this.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, Haley is not expected \u201cto win this,\u201d and while this week\u2019s Super Tuesday elections won\u2018t make things official,<\/em> they are expected to effectively be the final nail in the coffin for the ex-governor\u2019s campaign.* At which point she\u2019ll have lots of free time to think about the candidate she will support in the general election. And despite what she said on Meet the Press,<\/em> there\u2019s clearly still a distinct possibility that Haley will endorse Trump, because (1) Republicans are largely shameless, especially when it comes to falling in line re: Trump, and (2) she\u2019s already laid the groundwork to claim she\u2019s always believed Joe Biden<\/strong> somehow poses a bigger threat to the country than the guy who incited an actual coup attempt. During the same interview in which she said<\/a> voting for Trump \u201cis like suicide for our country,\u201d Haley also declared: \u201cI have serious concerns about Donald Trump. I have more serious concerns about Joe Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n *Unless she surprises everyone and makes a run for the White House with No Labels, which is highly unlikely. \u201cAll the talk about the independent, No Labels, all that\u2014I haven\u2019t talked to anybody about that,\u201d she<\/em> told<\/em><\/a> reporters last week. \u201cI know that they have sent smoke signals that they want me to talk to them, but I\u2019m a Republican.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\nX content<\/h4>\n
