An adaptation icon. A lot of Sam Claflin<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s roles have something in common, as the actor has a habit of starring in TV shows and movies based on best-selling books.<\/p>\n In February 2023, he starred as the fictional rock star Billy Dunne in the miniseries Daisy Jones & The Six<\/em><\/a>, based on author Taylor Jenkins Reid<\/strong>\u2019s 2019 book of the same name. The Prime Video series marked his tenth appearance in a novel adaptation \u2014 not counting the three separate Hunger Games<\/em><\/a> films he starred in \u2014 which subsequently earned him the title of \u201cbook to screen king\u201d by Reese Witherspoon<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Reese\u2019s Book Club in a February TikTok video<\/a>.<\/p>\n The star \u2014 who shares kids Pip and Margot with his ex-wife, Laura Haddock<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 has taken on a variety of roles in bringing beloved stories to life on the big and small screen, from showing his sentimental side in rom-coms such as Me Before You<\/em><\/a> and Love, Rosie<\/em>, to portraying the uptight brother of Sherlock Holmes in Enola Holmes<\/em> and more.<\/p>\n Perhaps Claflin\u2019s biggest book adaptation role to date is that of The Hunger Games<\/em>\u2019 Finnick Odair. His career skyrocketed following his debut as the District 4 victor in the 2013 sequel Catching Fire<\/em><\/a> and went on to reprise the role in Mockingjay \u2014 Part 1<\/em><\/a> and 2<\/em><\/a> in 2014 and 2015, respectively, alongside Jennifer Lawrence<\/strong><\/a>, Josh Hutcherson<\/strong><\/a> and Liam Hemsworth<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Having starred in so many versions of famous novels over the years, fans would be surprised to know that the Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/em> star isn\u2019t much of a reader himself. \u201cI have a bookshelf at home, but basically it consists of the book adaptations that I\u2019ve made,\u201d he admitted in a March 2023 interview with InStyle<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI only ever hear about the projects after I know there\u2019s a script out there, and someone says, \u2018Oh, did you realize it\u2019s a novel?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Unlike his Daisy Jones<\/em> character, Claflin\u2019s own knowledge of music isn\u2019t as vast, as he went on to reveal, \u201cI genuinely had to go online and google whether Daisy Jones & The Six was an actual band. My knowledge of 1970s rock and roll is very, very bad, so this has been a very huge learning curve for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Portraying well-known characters comes with pressure, something Claflin told InStyle<\/em> he felt a lot of during his Hunger Games<\/em> days. \u201cI think Finnick was such a beloved character,\u201d he shared. \u201cIf I remember right, there was a bit of an uproar when I got cast, because everyone was like, \u2018This guy looks nothing like him.\u2019 No one had ever really seen me do things, so I did everything in my power to go prove them wrong and prove that I could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n He previously opened up about being body-shamed on set<\/a> of one of his projects in a 2017 interview with The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>. \u201cI read in an interview recently and I think it\u2019s absolutely true: men have it just as bad,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cWell, not just as bad but they get it bad and it\u2019s never talked about. I remember doing one job when they literally made me pull my shirt up and were grabbing my fat and going, \u2018You need to lose a bit of weight.\u2019 This other time they were slapping me. I felt like a piece of meat.\u201d<\/p>\n
