Since 1984, nonprofit arts org Film Independent has been honoring American independent TV and filmmakers for their accomplishments at its Independent Spirit Awards. The 2024 ceremony\u2014the organization’s 39th\u2014will be held on Sunday, February 25 at 5 p.m. ET (the time will be 2 p.m. at the Awards’ Santa Monica Pier home).\u00a0<\/p>\n
This year’s host will be Aidy Bryant<\/strong>, whom Film Independent President Josh Welsh<\/strong> described as \u201cincandescently talented\u201d when her role was announced. \u201cWe can\u2019t wait to see what she has in store for us,\u201d he said. Nominees (which were announced in December<\/a>) include now-familiar awards show fixtures such as American Fiction,<\/em> Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph<\/strong>, and Ali Wong<\/strong>. But you’ll also find some less expected contenders: for example, Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch<\/strong> (nominated for his role in Bottoms<\/em>), best feature nominee We Grown Now<\/em>, and documentary series nominee Wrestlers.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n The awards can be a breath of fresh air, and not just because of its focus on non-blockbuster titles. Since 2022, the ceremony has also joined the move to make its awards gender neutral<\/a>. That means the best lead performance and best supporting performance categories will each have 10 nominees, inclusive of people who identify as male, female, and non-binary.<\/p>\n You can watch the Independent Spirit Awards as they happen a few ways: IMDb will stream it live via X (formerly Twitter)<\/a> and its YouTube channel<\/a>.
