Back in January, <strong>Mercedes-Benz<\/strong> made its real estate debut in a tie up with <strong>Binghatti Properties<\/strong>. The two companies partnered on a $1 billion development in Dubai that will include 150 apartments starting at $2.7 million a pop.<\/p>\n<p>A little bird told us that Mercedes will announce another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dubai.mercedesbenzplaces.com\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAoeGuBhCBARIsAGfKY7xElJaNaVYo0derRzFAFd14PJv5i0diLYDNdgkLwLVclarJHrMLzt8aAl41EALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cMercedes-Benz Places\u201d<\/a> development before the end of the month \u2014 this time in the United States. <em>What\u2019s your guess?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>On the EV front, we got word of an interesting development with <strong>Cake<\/strong>, the Swedish e-motorbikes startup that entered into bankruptcy protection. The economic skies got a lot cloudier though when interest rates rose, making it harder\u00a0to raise funding rounds and to secure the debt facilities required to acquire new vehicles. A wave of bankruptcies and mergers followed.<\/p>\n<p>Cityscoot raised at least $75 million since its founding in 2014. After\u00a0failing to secure a new funding round to keep the company afloat, it filed for insolvency and was later placed under court-ordered receivership. Cooltra\u2019s offer, which was approved by the courts,\u00a0mostly focuses on Cityscoot\u2019s assets, including its user base.<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/22\/consolidation-continues-in-micromobility-as-cooltra-snaps-up-cityscoot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cooltra is spending \u20ac400,000<\/a> ($430,000 at today\u2019s exchange rate) to acquire Cityscoot and plans to spend around \u20ac1.5 million ($1.6 million) over the next two years to finance the merger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other deals that got my attention \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Haomo.ai<\/strong>, an autonomous driving startup backed by Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/21\/greatwall-haomo-autonomous-driving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised 100 million yuan<\/a>, or $14 million, in a Series B funding round led by Chengdu Wufa Private Equity Fund Management, an investment vehicle backed by the government of Chengdu.<\/p>\n<p>Not a deal, but a name change! <strong>Robotic Research Autonomous Industries<\/strong> (RRAI), an autonomous vehicle company with a history of working with the Department of Defense, changed its name to\u202fForterra.<\/p>\n<h2>Notable reads and other tidbits<\/h2>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1926823 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png 1024w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=150,38 150w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=300,75 300w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=768,193 768w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=680,171 680w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/the-station-ride-hailing1.png?resize=50,13 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>Autonomous vehicles<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Uber Eats<\/strong> plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/20\/uber-eats-is-launching-a-delivery-service-with-cartkens-sidewalk-robots-in-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launch a delivery service<\/a> with <strong>Cartken\u2019s<\/strong> sidewalk robots in Japan. The companies are already have limited operations in Fairfax, Viriginia and Miami.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waymo\u2019s<\/strong> expansion plans for California have slowed <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/21\/waymos-application-to-expand-california-robotaxi-operations-paused-by-regulators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thanks to a delay<\/a> over at the <strong>California Public Utilities Commission<\/strong>. News of the pause had some casting this as a major setback. While criticism and pressure around regulations robotaxis has increased, I don\u2019t see think it\u2019s as detrimental as some suggest. The CPUC said its decision to suspend the application for further review is \u201cnot uncommon.\u201d To me the most interesting nugget was learning that Waymo had updated its application to include parts of San Mateo County that would unlock a route to the San Francisco International Airport.<\/p>\n<h3>Electric vehicles, batteries &amp; charging<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Arc<\/strong>, the electric boating startup, revealed a new battery-powered wake sports boat called the <a href=\"https:\/\/arcboats.com\/reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arc Sport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings illustrated \u2014 once again \u2014 that the appetite for high-priced luxury EVs might not be as large as we thought. <strong>Lucid Motors<\/strong> said it <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/21\/lucid-motors-2024-guidance-2023-results-gravity-suv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only build 9,000 EVs<\/a> in 2024 after once predicting it would ship 90,000; <strong>Rivian<\/strong>, which is laying off 10% of workers to cut costs, said it expects to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/21\/rivian-lays-off-10-of-workforce-as-ev-pricing-pressure-mounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build 57,000 EVs in 2024<\/a>; and <strong>Mercedes<\/strong> will not meet its target for 50% of sales to be electrified (including hybrids) by 2025. The new target is now 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Ford<\/strong> cut prices of its all-electric 2023 Mustang Mach-E by has much as $8,100 in an effort rid itself of inventory and compete with Tesla and its increasingly cheaper EVs.<\/p>\n<h3>In-car tech<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Hivemapper<\/strong>, a mapping startup, is launching a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/02\/21\/hivemapper-bee-dashcam-price-preorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new dashcam later<\/a> this year that its co-founder believes will speed up efforts to claw market share away from Google. I\u2019ve only had a couple of days behind the wheel, but I already have a list of \u201clikes\u201d and \u201croom for improvement.\u201d The white matte model I drove is listed at $82,450.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis aficionados might recognize the battery-electric G80 as it is nearly identical (with the exception of the powertrain and other related bits) to the gas-powered G80 3.5T Sport. Taking a vehicle designed for an internal combustion engine and reworking it into an EV does mean some compromises. The power and torque is there \u2014 two 136-kilowatt electric motors provide the equivalent of 182 horsepower each \u2014 and the finished look is compelling. But squeezing in that 87.2 kilowatt-hour battery ended up taking away some space from the trunk. And nope, there isn\u2019t a front trunk, or frunk, either.<\/p>\n<p>This EV is quiet on the highway, but tends to get a bit noisy on rougher roads. It works, but it isn\u2019t exactly smooth or intuitive. Add in a little glare from the sun and it can be difficult to see what is highlighted.
