Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery\u2019s surprise partnership<\/a> to create a sports streaming platform hasn\u2019t sat well with the TV streaming service Fubo. Today, Fubo filed an antitrust lawsuit against the three companies following what it calls \u201ca years-long campaign to block Fubo\u2019s innovative sports-first streaming business\u201d at consumers\u2019 expense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Fubo CEO David Gandler said that<\/a> the three companies had \u201cblocked our playbook for many years, and now they are effectively stealing it for themselves.\u201d Fubo has styled itself as a \u201csports-focused\u201d streaming service, but the company says restrictive licensing terms from sports networks have limited its options. It argues that \u201cunfair\u201d bundling terms have made it pay for and distribute \u201cexpensive non-sports channels that Fubo\u2019s customers do not want as a condition of licensing\u201d these sports channels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The Wall Street Journal<\/em> noted today<\/a> that Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery may charge around $50 a month for their new service \u2014 that\u2019s quite a bit cheaper than what you\u2019d pay for sports from Fubo or YouTube TV. Fubo says that\u2019s by design, accusing the trio of charging it more than the market rate to license their content. The company says that it\u2019s asking a judge to either block or limit the venture by requiring \u201ceconomic parity of licensing terms,\u201d as well as to award it damages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The sports streaming alliance makes business sense for Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery, as The Verge<\/em>\u2019s Emma Roth wrote last week<\/a>, but it\u2019s a risky time to do it, given all the regulatory moves the US government has been taking. The Department of Justice is reportedly already reviewing the companies\u2019 plan to determine whether it will hurt consumers if it goes through, Bloomberg<\/em> reported<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
