The movie was announced in January 2023, just one month after Henry Cavill shared that he would no longer be portraying Superman. \u201cI have just had a meeting with James Gunn [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThe business we inherited lost a lot of money. Maybe it did very well for Warner Bros. and CBS, but the actual business itself lost money,\u201d Schwartz told The Wrap<\/em> of the reasons behind the shift in property. \u201cThat\u2019s not anyone\u2019s fault. That was the model.\u201d<\/p>\nWhile most of The CW\u2019s lineup faced cancellations last year, All American<\/em> <\/a>and its sister show, Homecoming<\/em>, have consistently ranked as the most-watched series in adult demographics. Walker<\/em> and Superman & Lois<\/em> rank as the network\u2019s biggest in terms of total audience, which is what earned them each a renewal.<\/p>\n\u201cWe can\u2019t keep losing the amount of money we were on the shows,\u201d Schwartz continued. \u201cVery collaboratively, everyone got together and we pushed these four shows forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moving forward, The CW will be shifting into more unscripted content, but Schwartz noted that if scripted programs continue to bring in strong ratings at their current cost, then \u201cthere\u2019s no reason why you wouldn\u2019t keep doing them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Superhero shows, however, likely won\u2019t be seen on future slates. In May 2023, Schwartz noted at network Upfronts that while the genre was a \u201challmark\u201d<\/a> of the network for a long time, they are no longer \u201cworking on a linear\u201d when it comes to profit.<\/p>\n\u201cSuperman & Lois, creatively, is very strong,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does well in broadcast, it does well in digital \u2026 but it\u2019s expensive [and] doesn\u2019t make money for us. And we don\u2019t have the rights to the prior seasons. You need to have a library [for people to find a show] \u2026 and the prior seasons are [on Max].\u201d<\/p>\n
