Beyonc\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s opening up about her struggle with psoriasis while reflecting on her hair journey.<\/p>\n

In Essence<\/a>\u2019s March\/April cover story, on newsstands February 27, Beyonc\u00e9, 42, explained that she has \u201cmany beautiful memories attached to [her] hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relationship we have with our hair is such a deeply personal journey,\u201d she told the magazine while promoting her new haircare line, C\u00e9cred. \u201cFrom spending my childhood in my mother\u2019s salon to my father applying oil on my scalp to treat my psoriasis\u2014 these moments have been sacred to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scalp psoriasis causes the body to overproduce new skin cells, leading the immune system to attack healthy cells. As a result, thick, scaly and dry patches of skin can develop.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeyonc\u00e9\u2019s hair evolution is undeniably flawless. The singer emerged herself into the spotlight when she became the lead singer in Destiny\u2019s Child. At the time, she rocked multiple styles including box braids, voluminous curls, bangs, chunky highlights and more. Through the years, Beyonc\u00e9 has mostly opted for blonde locks but occasionally dons her natural brunette [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe conversations and debates in the salons and barbershops create a sense of community for the people who look to it as a retreat from their everyday lives,\u201d she continued. \u201cFor them, it\u2019s a place to feel beautiful and vent, laugh, share secrets and pass down wisdom. It\u2019s the most consistent community gathering we have. It\u2019s so important that it\u2019s a sanctuary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 explained that her previous experiences inspired the name of her brand.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I took the end of my name, C\u00e9, and made it the beginning of the word sacred to create C\u00e9cred,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom my mother\u2019s salon, daily rituals with my father, and years of experience in developing a hair care line, the journey has been just that: C\u00e9cred.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, Beyonc\u00e9 reflected on her decision to famously chop her hair into a pixie cut in 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love how we associate a certain hairstyle with moments in our lives, like that short-hair moment,\u201d she said. \u201cI remember the day I decided to just cut all my hair off. I didn\u2019t have a particular style in mind. It wasn\u2019t an aesthetic choice, but it was a very big emotional transformation and metamorphosis that I was going through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tBeyonc\u00e9 has always been in \u201cformation\u201d \u2014 especially when it comes to fashion.\u00a0 The hitmaker never misses the chance to make a style statement \u2014 on and off the red carpet. Some of her standout looks were from the Met Gala, specifically the 2015 soir\u00e9e, which boasted a \u201cChina: Through the Looking Glass\u201d theme. Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 made her hair transformation nearly one year after welcoming her and husband Jay-Z<\/strong>\u2019s first child<\/a>, Blue Ivy Carter, 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo much of my identity as a performer has been connected to flowing hair. Cutting my hair off was me rebelling against being this woman that society thinks I\u2019m supposed to be,\u201d she said. \u201cI was a new mother, and something about the liberation of becoming a mother made me want to just shed all of that. It was a physical representation of me shedding the expectations put upon me. I just wanted it off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9 noted her choice was \u201cvery intentional\u201d and she \u201cbecame super brave after,\u201d saying, \u201cIt was the first step to many more audacious decisions I made in my life and my career that have led to who I am now.\u201d<\/p>\n
