The writer and director, 42, attacked the industry\u2019s reluctance to fund \u201crisky\u201d projects after he picked up the best adapted screenplay trophy for his film \u2018American Fiction\u2019 at Sunday\u2019s (18.02.24) 77th annual BAFTA awards in London\u2019s Royal Festival Hall.<\/p>\n
He said during the winners\u2019 press conference about the comedy drama about racist stereotypes: \u201cSo many people were so afraid to take on this movie and so afraid to finance it and give us distribution.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the movie does anything \u2013 and I love the awards and recognition \u2013 but if the movie can do anything I hope it will serve as an example for filmmakers coming behind me, and those who are nervous about financing things.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it is morally right to tell stories from undr-repesented people. \u201cUnfortunately, this industry does not operate on morality \u2013 it operates on success\u2026 it\u2019s a business.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI hope this film\u2019s critical and financial success affords other people opportunities and maybe changes the minds of people who are in charge of greenlighting films and TV shows.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI hope it serves as an example for someone who is in the upper echelon of these companies and these streamers and change their minds about what audiences want and what will be successful and what critics want.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIf it serves as a reminder that taking a risk is good, then that will be a delight to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u2018American Fiction\u2019 follows a frustrated novelist-professor played by Jeffrey Wright, 58, in the movie, who writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical \u201cblack books\u201d \u2013 only for it to be mistaken by snobs for serious literature and published to high sales and critical praise.<\/p>\n
\nIt is also nominated for five Oscars, including best picture and best adapted screenplay.<\/p>\n
\nCord \u2013\u00a0who beat the writers of \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019, \u2018All of us Strangers\u2019, \u2018Poor Things\u2019 and \u2018The Zone of Interest\u2019 at Sunday\u2019s BAFTAs \u2013\u00a0added he had Jeffrey in mind for the project while he was reading the \u2018erasure\u2019 book on which it was based, adding he doesn\u2019t know what he would have done if he had refused the part.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
