Jennifer Lopez<\/strong><\/a> was sending a romantic message to husband Ben Affleck<\/strong><\/a> when she featured The Way We Were<\/em> in her new film, This Is Me \u2026 Now: A Love Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one of mine and Ben\u2019s favorite movies,\u201d Lopez, 54, told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Friday, February 16. \u201cWe watched it 20 years ago. I actually showed it to him when we were together last time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the narrative-driven musical, Lopez watches the 1973 tearjerker starring Barbra Streisand<\/strong> and Robert Redford<\/strong>, repeating the lines back to herself as she cries over a past heartbreak. Lopez told EW<\/em> that incorporating the emotional moment was \u201cspecial\u201d to her \u2014 plus she has a lot of love for the movie\u2019s lead actress.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a huge Barbra Streisand fan,\u201d she said. \u201cMy mother really imparted [this movie] to me. That was her favorite romantic movie growing up. So it has a lot of significance for me.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

This Is Me \u2026 Now: A Love Story<\/em>, which premiered on Prime Video Friday, is a fictionalized portrayal of Lopez\u2019s life over the past 20 years in tandem with her new album of the same name. The story follows Lopez as she overcomes a series of bad relationships and blossoms into a place of self-love before being reunited with The One, inspired by her life after her 2002 split from Affleck, before the pair rekindled their romance nearly two decades later.<\/p>\n

The Way We Were<\/em> isn\u2019t the only classic musical that gets a shoutout in This Is Me \u2026 Now<\/em>. Lopez also pays homage to Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em> during the final moments of the film with a solo dance number during a stormy night in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love musicals. I always have,\u201d she told the outlet. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, I wanted to do something in the rain. I didn\u2019t want to make it Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em> I wanted to dance with the hummingbird in the rain, and it came out like, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s like Singin\u2019 In the Rain<\/em>.\u00a0<\/i>I am singing and dancing in the rain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez noted that \u201ceverything\u201d she\u2019s done in her life was woven into the film. \u201cWhether it\u2019s romantic comedies and dramas, growing up on musical theater and in the MTV generation and the golden age of music videos and putting stuff out at that time \u2014 all of it\u2019s in here,\u201d she explained. \u201cEverything about me. I\u2019ve never done a project where I got to use everything about myself personally and professionally in one project.\u201d<\/p>\n

While This Is Me \u2026 Now: A Love Story<\/em> recalls Lopez\u2019s time away from Affleck, the album serves as a follow-up to her 2002 record, This Is Me \u2026 Then<\/em>, which was inspired by the pair\u2019s relationship and subsequent 2002 breakup.<\/p>\n

After their split, Lopez went on to marry Marc Anthony<\/strong>, and the exes share twins Max and Emme. She later moved on with Alex Rodriguez<\/strong>, but the twosome called it quits in March 2021 after four years together. Affleck, for his part, welcomed kids Violet, Seraphina and Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner<\/strong> before their 2018 divorce.<\/p>\n
