As the inaugural Golden Bachelor, Gerry was skeptical that he would find love with multiple women<\/a>, but he ultimately fell into the same trap as past Bachelors and Bachelorettes. \u201cI thought, \u2018No, that\u2019s absolutely not possible. That\u2019s silly.\u2019 How wrong I was,\u201d he exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> in September. \u201cBecause through the course of the journey, I really felt strong feelings for several of the women.\u201d<\/p>\nDespite his deep connections, Gerry did not believe that he was truly \u201cin love\u201d with more than one woman. \u201cIn retrospect, I realized that in that particular moment, whenever it was \u2014 the setting was such that, \u2018Yeah, it was easy to look at someone and tell \u2018em that you loved \u2018em,\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cBut once you get through it all and you look back, then you realize that there is just really one person that really meets the standard in all situations that you want it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
While Gerry set several boundaries for himself before filming began, he ended up letting his heart guide him through the process. \u201cI had a few rules, but I was breaking them all. That was the problem. So I decided I would stop,\u201d he told Us<\/em>. \u201c[My daughters and granddaughters<\/a>] were worried that I was going to be that guy that was kissing everybody on the first night. And I said, \u2018Nope, I\u2019m not going to kiss anyone on the first night. You\u2019re not going to see that. Maybe not even as we get into it.\u2019 Well, as you\u2019ll see, I failed on the very first night, but I don\u2019t feel bad about it at all.\u201d<\/p>\nGerry ultimately fell for Theresa Nist<\/strong> who he married last month in the televised Golden Wedding<\/em><\/a> special, which aired one month after the Golden Bachelor<\/em> finale.<\/p>\n\u201cI have learned that you are the woman I can\u2019t live without. I learned that you make me calm with the touch of your hand. I\u2019ve learned you make me laugh with the easy comfort of a long-lost friend,\u201d he said during his vows. \u201cI\u2019ve learned you are a strong and independent woman, and your strength gives me joy. I\u2019ve learned that you make me a better person, a better man because of your sensitivity and soft voice. Theresa, I now know I have found a full partner to share the experiences life will throw at us.\u201d<\/p>\n
