Meanwhile, its first pair of full-fledged AR glasses, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23022611\/meta-facebook-nazare-ar-glasses-roadmap-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted will eventually be as widely used as mobile phones<\/a>, is planned for 2027.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The details were shared with thousands of employees in Meta\u2019s Reality Labs division on Tuesday during a roadmap presentation of its AR and VR efforts that was shared with <em>The Verge<\/em>. Altogether, they show how Meta is planning to keep investing in consumer hardware <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/11\/11\/23454019\/meta-portal-smartwatch-efforts-shutting-down-hardware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after a series<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/6\/23391895\/meta-facebook-horizon-worlds-vr-social-network-too-buggy-leaked-memo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">setbacks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/2\/1\/23581938\/mark-zuckerberg-meta-earnings-q4-efficiency-cutting-managers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broader cost cutting across the company<\/a>. A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment for this story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">With regards to the VR roadmap, employees were told that Meta\u2019s flagship Quest 3 headset coming later this year will be two times thinner, at least twice as powerful, and cost slightly more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/7\/26\/23279272\/meta-quest-2-occulus-100-price-increase\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">than the $400 Quest 2<\/a>. Like the recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23393115\/meta-quest-pro-vr-headset-hands-on-specs-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced Quest Pro<\/a>, it will prominently feature mixed reality experiences that don\u2019t fully immerse the wearer, thanks to front-facing cameras that pass through video of the real world. You can put anchors and things on your desktop. You can take your coffee. In 2024, he said that Meta plans to ship a more \u201caccessible\u201d headset codenamed Ventura. \u201cThe goal for this headset is very simple: pack the biggest punch we can at the most attractive price point in the VR consumer market.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Rabkin didn\u2019t say whether a second generation of the recent Meta Quest Pro, which received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23451629\/meta-quest-pro-vr-headset-horizon-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poor reviews<\/a> from <em>The Verge <\/em>and others, is coming anytime soon. But its big swings over the coming years speak to the serious competition that\u2019s about to arrive. Apple is e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/1\/23\/23567935\/apple-reality-pro-vr-headset-hand-tracking-mac-screen-mirror-facetime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">xpected to announce a high-end virtual reality headset<\/a> sometime this year, while Sony just released the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23601368\/sony-playstation-ps-vr2-review-virtual-reality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well-received PSVR 2 for console gamers<\/a>. The key difference from VR is that the company intends for AR glasses to eventually be worn throughout the day as a replacement for smartphones. Zuckerberg has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23022611\/meta-facebook-nazare-ar-glasses-roadmap-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called them the \u201choly grail\u201d device<\/a> that will \u201credefine our relationship with technology\u201d by the end of this decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">During Tuesday\u2019s roadmap presentation, Alex Himel, the company\u2019s vice president for AR, laid out the plan for a bevy of devices through 2027. The first launch will come this fall with the second generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/9\/9\/22662809\/facebook-ray-ban-stories-camera-smart-glasses-hands-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta\u2019s camera-equipped smart glasses<\/a> it released in 2021 with Luxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In 2025, Himel said the third generation of the smart glasses will ship with a display that he called a \u201cviewfinder\u201d for viewing incoming text messages, scanning QR codes, and translating text from another language in real time.
