{"id":74618,"date":"2024-02-09T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/09\/im-going-to-tell-you-everything-a-first-look-at-john-gallianos-revealing-documentary\/"},"modified":"2024-02-09T14:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-09T14:00:00","slug":"im-going-to-tell-you-everything-a-first-look-at-john-gallianos-revealing-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/09\/im-going-to-tell-you-everything-a-first-look-at-john-gallianos-revealing-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cI\u2019m Going to Tell You Everything\u201d: A First Look at John Galliano\u2019s Revealing Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"has-dropcap\">\u201cYeah, I\u2019m going to tell you everything,\u201d says fashion designer <strong>John Galliano<\/strong> in the forthcoming documentary <em>High &amp; Low: John Galliano,<\/em> which traces his rise in the 1990s and 2000s couture scene, then abrupt fall after racist and antisemitic outbursts in 2010 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Academy Award\u2013winning documentarian <strong>Kevin Macdonald,<\/strong> who has previously chronicled the lives of Whitney Houston and Bob Marley, was interested in exploring the complexities of so-called cancel culture through Galliano\u2019s experience. \u201cOur society has a constantly evolving relationship with the idea of redemption; who can be redeemed and how,\u201d the director said in a statement. \u201cI was interested in making a documentary about what happens when you do something utterly unacceptable; how do you find forgiveness and redemption? Should you be forgiven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the first trailer for the film, premiering exclusively below, famous faces including <strong>Anna Wintour,<\/strong> <strong>Edward Enninful,<\/strong> <strong>Pen\u00e9lope Cruz,<\/strong> and <strong>Kate Moss<\/strong> recall Galliano\u2019s renowned run at fashion houses including Givenchy and Dior. \u201cWe wanted to be part of that magic,\u201d says <strong>Naomi Campbell.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure data-testid=\"IframeEmbed\" class=\"IframeEmbedWrapper-sc-dRedg hZcniq iframe-embed\">\n<div data-testid=\"IframeEmbedContainer\" class=\"IframeEmbedContainer-hptgUZ hSLYci\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"IframeEmbedContent-cMdiev csnuAY IframeEmbedContent\" height=\"113\" width=\"200\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" title=\"Embedded Frame\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/Yroj8-OWEao\" allow=\"autoplay *; encrypted-media *; clipboard-write; autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But Galliano\u2019s success came with inevitable pressures. He says he drank to cope, which led him on a path of destructive behavior, culminating in incidents in 2010 and 2011, one of which caught him on camera hurling antisemitic insults at someone outside Paris\u2019s Caf\u00e9 La Perle. Galliano was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/WORLD\/europe\/09\/08\/france.designer.trial\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted and fined<\/a> for the outbursts and ousted from Dior. After years spent undergoing rehab and consulting with Jewish organizations, he was named creative director of Maison Margiela in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">His comeback was a muted one, and Galliano has largely stayed out of the spotlight since\u2014until now. A mutual friend introduced the designer to Macdonald, who began speaking with his future subject during the pandemic. Tentative Zoom sessions led to a \u201ctrial interview\u201d in August 2021; four additional sit-downs followed. \u201cWhat particularly compelled me was that John didn\u2019t really understand what had happened himself\u2014it was still a mystery to him,\u201d says Macdonald. During their initial six-hour interview, \u201cI was struck by how at ease John was looking straight down the camera lens,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt had the feeling of a confessional.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"GenericCalloutWrapper-tojWn loDovw callout--has-top-border\" data-testid=\"GenericCallout\">\n<figure class=\"AssetEmbedWrapper-eVDQiB byBkf asset-embed\">\n<div class=\"AssetEmbedAssetContainer-eJxoAx dBHGoQ asset-embed__asset-container\"><span class=\"SpanWrapper-umhxW kGxnNB responsive-asset AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-cXBNxi eCxVQK asset-embed__responsive-asset\"><picture class=\"ResponsiveImagePicture-cWuUZO dUOtEa AssetEmbedResponsiveAsset-cXBNxi eCxVQK asset-embed__responsive-asset responsive-image\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/picture><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"BaseWrap-sc-gjQpdd BaseText-ewhhUZ CaptionCredit-ejegDm iUEiRd hCJFDV fNaHcW caption__credit\">Courtesy of Mubi<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The documentary features an inside look at the fashion industry, including the lead-up to Galliano\u2019s triumphant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/fashion\/gallery\/maison-margiela-couture-aw22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinema Inferno fashion show<\/a> at Paris Fashion Week in 2022, and his first return to the Dior archives since being fired. That trip was made possible, in part, by <strong>Sidney Toledano,<\/strong> who is Jewish and the former CEO of Christian Dior Couture, and who speaks candidly about the impact Galliano\u2019s antisemitic remarks had on him. Macdonald also interviewed one of Galliano\u2019s victims and plaintiffs in the court case against him, <strong>Philippe Virgitti.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cGalliano did not have any editorial control of the film,\u201d says Macdonald of his unflinching documentary. \u201cThroughout the process, he has been helpful in introducing us to friends, family, and former colleagues, but understood that filmmaker objectivity was essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The film was produced by Macdonald and <strong>Chloe Mamelok<\/strong> through Macdonald\u2019s production company, KGB Films, in association with Cond\u00e9 Nast Entertainment.
