The 60-year-old \u2018Fight Club\u2019 actor starred in the Western in 1994 and its director Ed Zwick, 71, has now opened up about what it was like to direct the star \u2013 revealing one of their bust-ups ended with a chair being flung.<\/p>\n
He says in his \u2018Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood\u2019 memoir: \u201cIt fell to (producer) Marshall (Herskovitz) to talk Brad off the ledge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was the first augury of the deeper springs of emotion roiling inside Brad. He seems easy going at first, but he can be volatile when riled, as I was to be reminded more than once as shooting began and we took each other\u2019s measure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ed, whose other films include \u2018Blood Diamond\u2019 and \u2018The Last Samurai\u2019, added Brad and his relationship would grow strained as the A-lister would allegedly \u201cget edgy\u201d when \u201che was about to shoot a scene that required him to display deep emotion\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nThe director added he would try and push the actor out of his comfort zone because he had grown up with men in the Ozarks \u201cwho held their emotions in check\u201d and he wanted the character to show true emotions.<\/p>\n
\nBut Ed admitted about the strategy backfiring: \u201cYet the more I pushed Brad to reveal himself, the more he resisted.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo, I kept pushing and Brad pushed back.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEd said one particularly heated face-off ended with a chair being thrown when he gave Brad a direction in front of the crew, which he admitted was a \u201cstupid, shaming provocation\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cBrad came back at me, also out loud, telling me to back off\u2026 I was angry at Brad for not trusting me to influence his performance.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAlso for the reluctance he\u2019d shown after the first table read\u2026 but Brad wasn\u2019t about to give in without a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIn his defence, I was pushing him to do something he felt was either wrong for the character, or more \u2019emo\u2019 than he wanted to appear onscreen.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI don\u2019t know who yelled first, who swore, or who threw the first chair. Me, maybe? But when we looked up, the crew had disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEd stressed that even though he and Brad would have regular \u201cblow ups\u201d they would always \u201cmake up and mean it\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
