Donald Glover<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out about the original version of his TV show Mr. & Mrs. Smith<\/em> that would have starred him alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n If you don\u2019t know, they were originally set to co-star as the leads, but Phoebe <\/strong>stepped away in September of 2021.<\/a> Donald <\/strong>is now telling his version of the events. The show recently debuted on Prime Video with PEN15<\/em>\u2018s Maya Erskine<\/strong><\/a> taking over for Phoebe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Donald <\/strong>shared with THR<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s a divorce in a weird way. You\u2019re like, \u2018Oh sh-t, this should have worked.\u2019 And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don\u2019t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don\u2019t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cIt might\u2019ve just been cultural. You\u2019ve got to think, Fleabag <\/em>was written entirely by her, they don\u2019t really do writers rooms in the U.K. And I look back at Atlanta, and we built a culture where we could say mean things to each other or be like, \u2018That idea is kind of [crap],\u2019 and then we\u2019d laugh. You weren\u2019t afraid to say something \u2014 but we also had the right to roast you. It\u2019s just how we got the laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n He added, \u201cI don\u2019t think we ever felt comfortable enough with each other. And that\u2019s OK. That\u2019s what happens when you\u2019re two captains. It\u2019s like, \u2018This is how I run my ship.\u2019 \u2018Well, this is how I run my ship.\u2019 And it\u2019s such a big idea, this show, I don\u2019t think it can have two captains. I mean, she rewrote the pilot, and I saw her script and I was like, \u2018It\u2019s definitely not my style,\u2019 but if she\u2019d done it with her in it, we\u2019d all be like, \u2018This is a great f-cking show.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n About when to know it was time to \u201cdivorce,\u201d Donald said, \u201cIt\u2019s like a real divorce where the hardest part is knowing when to say it\u2019s over. Like, when do you quit? Because you want to be cool, like, \u2018Oh it\u2019s over, that\u2019s fine.\u2019 But we both put a lot of work into it. We both were working really hard. So, who gets to keep the cat? (Laughs.)\u201d <\/p>\n And about why he got to continue working on the show while she exited, he said, \u201cBut I\u2019d brought [showrunner Francesca \u201cFran\u201d Sloane<\/strong>] in, and also, I feel like Phoebe wasn\u2019t fully in love with the thing. But I feel really good about the fact that if the thing was feeling more like hers and she was like, \u2018I just love this,\u2019 I would have been like, \u2018You should have it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Phoebe <\/strong>previously explained the real reason why she chose to exit the series.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
