The summer months have long been the most crowded time of year in popular European cities<\/a>. However, since international travel came roaring back in 2022, airlines have tracked a distinct trend: Travelers are flocking across the Atlantic during what have traditionally been known as “off-peak” months.<\/p>\n

Travel over the last four years was marked by dramatic ups and downs \u2014 COVID-19 stymying travel in 2020, “revenge travel” crowds overwhelming airlines in 2022<\/a>, then Transportation Security Administration checkpoints setting all-time records in 2023.<\/p>\n

But even as some of the more domestic-focused carriers (like low-cost airlines) have bemoaned, in recent months, a supply of seats exceeding demand for domestic travel, some of the largest U.S. airlines are hoping to ride a demand wave across the Atlantic well into 2024 and beyond … and not just in June, July or August.<\/p>\n

“I think we’re at our new norm, and our new norm is different from 2019,” Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta Air Lines<\/a>, told analysts on the company’s January earnings call.<\/p>\n

Specifically, Hauenstein said that the “new norm” includes a peak season in Europe that largely extends beyond the sweatiest summer months \u2014 when tourists stand in line at the Eiffel Tower and shoulder to shoulder at the Trevi Fountain.<\/p>\n

“It used to be the [peak of summer] was just June, July, August,” Hauenstein explained. “We’ve seen the seasons elongate for leisure travel to Europe, and, really, March through October now is pretty strong.”<\/p>\n
