In the Monday edition of newspapers across America, readers of the funny pages were greeted by a distinctly serious note. Instead of a new edition of \u201cDilbert,\u201d the long-running cartoon strip about the travails of a disgruntled office worker, they saw publishers\u2019 notes announcing that the comic had been dropped. The Associated Press<\/a> reported that Attleboro, Massachusetts, paper The Sun Chronicle<\/em> simply printed an empty box. Last week, the comic\u2019s author, Scott Adams,<\/strong> made headlines for a February 22 tirade in which he called Black Americans a \u201chate group\u201d and urged white people to \u201cto get the hell away from Black people.\u201d<\/p>\n In response, newspapers across America began to drop the cartoon, and on Sunday<\/a>, \u201cDilbert\u201d was dropped by its distributor, Andrews McMeel Universal. According to NPR<\/a>, the cartoon previously appeared in 2,000 newspapers in 65 countries and 25 languages. The comic has been removed from Andrew McMeel\u2019s website, and on Monday, Adams announced that it would now only be available via a subscription<\/a> to his Locals page.<\/p>\n In statements posted to Twitter, Andrews McMeel said it supported free speech<\/a> but that Adams\u2019s comments weren\u2019t compatible with the company\u2019s values. \u201cWe are proud to promote and share many different voices and perspectives,\u201d read a statement<\/a> cosigned by chairman Hugh Andrews<\/strong> and CEO and president Andy Sareyan.<\/strong> \u201cBut we will never support any commentary rooted in discrimination or hate.\u201d<\/p>\n Those who have been keeping up with the worlds of newspaper comics or right-wing guys with YouTube channels may have known that Adams has a lot of opinions, and by 2016, he had become a full-throated supporter<\/a> of Donald Trump.<\/strong> But until now, his political commentary hasn\u2019t had a huge impact on his main gig, the comic that he has written since 1989. Though Adams\u2019s racially insensitive remarks have caused outcry before\u2014he has claimed<\/a> that UPN\u2019s desire to appeal to African American viewers is the reason why the 1999 Dilbert<\/em> animated series was canceled, and in 2021<\/a> he introduced a Black character who identifies as white to mock \u201cwokeism\u201d\u2014last week\u2019s comments on his channel seemingly crossed a line for newspapers across the country.<\/p>\n The segment from the February 22 episode of Real Coffee With Scott Adams<\/em> that led to the uproar began with Adams reading the results of a poll from Rasmussen that claimed that 47% of Black Americans were not willing to agree with the statement \u201cIt\u2019s okay to be white.\u201d (Putting the metaphysics of the question aside, the Anti-Defamation League<\/a> documented the phrase\u2019s journey from a 4Chan board to a white supremacist poster campaign back in 2017, and it has been spotted at demonstrations<\/a> by hate groups<\/a> and supporters<\/a> of Confederate symbols ever since.)<\/p>\n \u201cIf nearly half of all Blacks are not okay with white people\u2014according to this poll, not according to me, according to this poll\u2014that\u2019s a hate group,\u201d Adams said<\/a> in response to the survey results. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t want to have anything to do with them.\u201d<\/p>\n He added that he moved to a neighborhood with a \u201cvery low Black population,\u201d in order to escape. \u201cIt makes no sense whatsoever as a white citizen of America to try to help Black citizens anymore. In response to a post about Adams\u2019s comment, the CEO tweeted<\/a>, \u201cThe media is racist.\u201d He continued, \u201cFor a very long time, US media was racist against non-white people, now they\u2019re racist against whites & Asians. Same thing happened with elite colleges & high schools in America.
