The 81-year-old musician has recalled the terrifying moment when he and wife Linda were recording Wings’ 1973 album ‘Band on the Run’ in Lagos, Nigeria, and were ambushed with all their \u201ccameras, tape recorders, cassettes in a bag, and Linda\u2019s photographic equipment\u201d.<\/p>\n
In an interview for his record label, seen first by The Sun newspaper, he said: \u201cWe\u2019d been visiting some of our crew at their house and someone said, \u2018Do you want a lift home?\u2019 We said, \u2018It\u2019s such a beautiful night, we\u2019ll walk.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Adopting a “desperado” spirit, the couple wandered into a no-go area and thought they were being offered a lift when a car stopped and the driver wound down his window.<\/p>\n
Paul recalled: \u201cI just say, \u2018No, listen man, very nice of you but we don\u2019t need a lift.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe vehicle, which contained 2five or six local guys” drove off but then suddenly stopped again.<\/p>\n
\nThe Beatles legend continued: \u201cAll of them get out. I said, \u2018Holy cow. Wait a minute, they\u2019re not offering us a lift.\u2019 The penny drops. One of the guys is holding a knife at me.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe give them all our stuff and they get back in the car. Screech off. They go the wrong way. They come back and we\u2019re going, \u2018Oh no, they\u2019re going to finish us off!\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnyway, they zoomed off. Eventually Linda and I walked home. We just got into bed and said, \u2018Forget it.\u2019 “<\/p>\n
\nAnd the ‘Live and Let Die’ hitmakers were told afterwards they were “lucky” to have made it out alive.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cThe next day, we went to the studio and the manager said, \u2018Man, you\u2019re lucky you\u2019re white. If you were black, they could have killed you because you might have recognised them.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDespite losing the original demos to the robbers, Paul wasn’t too concerned because of a “rule” he and late Beatles bandmate John Lennon had “always had”.<\/p>\n
\nHe explained: \u201cIt meant I had to remember the album,.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe didn\u2019t have cassettes or recording devices back then [in The Beatles].<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe used to say, \u2018If you can\u2019t remember it, how will the people remember it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
