Because the requirements for entry differ from country to country. In the midst of planning my 2024 travel, I realized my U.S. passport expires in April, which could mess with my plans abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, I use a <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/summer-travel-checklist\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">travel checklist<\/a> to avoid disruptions to my travel itinerary.<\/p>\n<p>I immediately started the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/things-to-know-renewing-passport\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passport renewal process<\/a> online and had my photo taken at my local Walgreens \u2014 although you can <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/home-passport-photo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DIY your passport photo<\/a> if you prefer \u2014 so I could send out my application as quickly as possible. I also opted to expedite the processing time for an additional $60 fee and sent my application on its way.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re also in the middle of planning 2024 travel or simply want to know the ideal time to begin getting ready to renew your passport, the TPG team has you covered.<\/p>\n<p>We collected information from the <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Department of State website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the United Kingdom&#8217;s government website<\/a> to create a one-stop cheat sheet examining a range of nations that typically require you to have a passport that lasts longer than your trip \u2014 whether by one, three or six months.<\/p>\n<p>Note that certain countries deviate from the standard six-month requirement. These findings are also only related to passport validity dates \u2014 we&#8217;re not covering <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/visas-for-international-travel\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">visa requirements<\/a> here. Those can vary depending on where you&#8217;re going and where you&#8217;re coming from.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"schengen-countries-in-europe\" class=\"jsx-3480274316 anchor\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-3480274316\">Schengen countries in Europe<\/h2>\n<p>Many European countries are signers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/guide\/schengen-area-countries\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schengen Agreement<\/a>.
