Sophia Bush<\/strong><\/a> claims that she was promised that her character, Brooke, wouldn\u2019t date her on-again, off-again boyfriend Austin Nichols\u2019<\/strong><\/a> character, Julian, when he joined the cast of One Tree Hill<\/em><\/a> for season 6 \u2013 only for the characters to walk down the aisle two years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said he would be there for a time, maybe break [Peyton and Lucas] up,\u201d Bush, 41, told cohost Hilarie Burton Morgan<\/strong> during the Monday, January 29, episode of their \u201cDrama Queens<\/a>\u201d podcast. \u201cThere was a lot of apology from the boss [Mark Schwahn<\/strong>] that was like, \u2018I had no idea this overlapped with your real life how weird.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Dude, I\u2019ve dated like three people in 10 years. What do you mean you had no idea? You\u2019re my nightmare.\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Promise you\u2019ll barely ever have scenes together but it will certainly never be romantic.\u2019\u201d\n<\/p>\n

Nichols, 43, joined the cast of OTH i<\/em>n season 6 as Julian Baker, an agent from Los Angeles who wants to make a movie out of Lucas\u2019 (Chad Michael Murray<\/strong>) novel. However, once he gets to town it\u2019s revealed that he and Peyton (Burton Morgan) were once an item. Despite Schwahn\u2019s alleged promises, Julian strikes up a romance with Bush\u2019s Brooke before the end of season 6, with the pair going on to tie the knot in season 7 and even welcoming twins before the series finale in 2012.<\/p>\n

While discussing Julian\u2019s first appearance in season 6 episode 8, Bush claimed that the initial intention was to make the character a \u201cbad boy movie producer\u201d and \u201csuper cool\u201d guy until Schwahn, 57, allegedly decided it would threaten his status on set.<\/p>\n

The characters on One Tree Hill were in countless love triangles, went on romantic excursions and even got married in high school. In real life, things weren\u2019t always so magical. \u201cWhen they shifted it and did what they were going to do anyway and Julian of course becomes the person that Brooke marries, the hilarity of it was there were other dynamics at play and our creepy boss didn\u2019t want all of Julian Baker\u2019s cool, hot movie star character friends coming into town,\u201d she continued. \u201cHe did not want any more attractive young male cast members on our set to pull attention away from him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bush claimed that\u00a0 Schwahn ultimately decided to \u201cemotionally castrate\u201d Julian once he began dating Brooke. So much so, that the character became someone who \u201cdidn\u2019t know how to high five\u201d and had to ask Nathan (James Lafferty<\/strong>) and Haley\u2019s (Bethany Joy Lenz<\/strong>) 6year-old son, Jamie (Jackson Brundage<\/strong>), to be the best man at his wedding because \u201che had no friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all like, \u2018What is happening?\u2019\u201d Bush quipped while recalling the story line, to which Burton Morgan replied, \u201cWild.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bush and Nichols dated on and off for six years before calling it quits for good in February 2012, just two months before the OTH<\/em> series finale aired. Bush revealed during an October 2023 episode of \u201cDrama Queens\u2019 that Nichols was her first date<\/a> after her public divorce from her other costar Murray, 42, in 2006.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the early days of our show [OTH<\/em>], all of us were partnered and then I very publicly was not,\u201d Bush explained. \u201cThe first date I went on was with a very sweet boy named Austin Nichols when I was 23. We dated on and off for years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nichols joined the show after Bush told him dating long-distance was \u201ctoo hard\u201d to maintain.<\/p>\n

\u201cBold, gorgeous, romantic gesture,\u201d Bush gushed. \u201cWe laugh about it all the time. We\u2019re still good friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
