Momentum is back on\u00a0Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/em>\u2019s side. The highest-grossing film in distributor A24\u2019s history was honored with the Producers\u2019 Guild of America\u2019s award for best theatrical motion picture, a major indication of strength. The movie will head into the final week of Oscar campaigning as the clear front-runner. The PGA prize was shared by writer-director-producers\u00a0Dan Kwan<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Daniel Scheinert,<\/strong>\u00a0as well as their longtime collaborator\u00a0Jonathan Wang.<\/strong><\/p>\n The result is not much of a surprise after\u00a0Everything Everywhere<\/em> took home the top award with the directors\u2019 guild last week, and offers evidence that this race has narrowed considerably, despite\u00a0All Quiet on the Western Front<\/em>\u2014which was not even nominated by PGA\u2014winning BAFTA\u2019s best film award on Sunday. The producers\u2019 guild tends to disproportionately favor bigger-budget hits\u2014see them choosing\u00a01917<\/em> over\u00a0Parasite<\/em>,\u00a0La La Land<\/em>\u00a0over\u00a0Moonlight<\/em>, and so on\u2014so\u00a0Everything Everywhere<\/em>\u00a0winning over the likes of\u00a0Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Elvis<\/em>\u00a0is notable. Just last year, the micro-budgeted\u00a0CODA<\/em>\u00a0pulled off a huge upset with PGA, a result that led to its Oscar triumph. Most years, this represents the make-or-break moment for blockbuster contenders.<\/p>\n The PGA uses a preferential balloting system to determine its winner, which is the most similar to the Academy\u2019s method of tabulating votes for best picture. It\u2019s why the likable\u00a0CODA<\/em>\u00a0winning here over the more polarizing\u00a0Power of the Dog<\/em>\u00a0was telling\u2014or to go back a few years earlier, why\u00a0Green Book<\/em>\u2019s PGA victory offered sufficient evidence that the industry liked it enough to take it all the way.\u00a0Everything Everywhere<\/em>\u00a0has its detractors, but with a leading 11 Oscar nominations under its belt, should meet an even friendlier audience with the Academy, and it\u2019s now proven it can win under a ranked system. If the cast takes the SAG ensemble prize tomorrow as expected, the film will be in a very strong position to win the top Oscar.<\/p>\n Underwhelming BAFTA showing aside\u2014it lost every award but editing\u2014Everything Everywhere<\/em>\u00a0has enjoyed a serendipitous awards journey since its SXSW premiere about a year ago. A hit with both critics and audiences, the movie has won best-picture honors from top indie-film groups (Gotham Awards), critics organizations (Los Angeles Film Critics Association), and now, several of the most influential industry guilds.\u00a0Ke Huy Quan<\/strong>\u00a0is the clear favorite to win best supporting actor, while Kwan and Scheinert are competitive in the directing and original screenplay categories, as is\u00a0Michelle Yeoh<\/strong>\u00a0in best actress.<\/p>\n If any other movie got a PGA boost, even without a win, it\u2019d probably be\u00a0Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>.\u00a0Tom Cruise<\/strong>\u00a0was recognized with the guild\u2019s David O. Selznick Achievement Award, its highest honor in film, and as at the Oscar nominees\u2019 luncheon earlier this month, he completely stole the show.<\/p>\n Other film winners included\u00a0Guillermo del Toro<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Pinocchio<\/em>\u00a0for animated film, the probable Oscar champ there, and BAFTA selection\u00a0Navalny<\/em>\u00a0for documentary. On the TV side,\u00a0The Bear<\/em>\u00a0scored its first major win with the comedy-series trophy,\u00a0The White Lotus<\/em>\u00a0took home drama, and in a nice wrap to its awards run, Hulu\u2019s\u00a0The Dropout<\/em>\u00a0was named best limited series.
