Dan Marino<\/strong> was ready to turn down a cameo in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective<\/em> until he met Jim Carrey<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first I wasn\u2019t really going to do it, to be honest with you,\u201d the Hall of Fame quarterback, 62, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on Tuesday, January 23, while promoting his Super Bowl commercial with M&Ms. \u201cBecause I read the script. I\u2019m like, \u2018This is a little weird.\u2019 And then I made, then I met Jim Carey, like, OK, this could be all right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his meeting with Carrey, 62, Marino realized the comedian had a clean vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis guy could kind of take this whole thing on and we could have some fun together. And it turned out to be, like, a cult movie,\u201d Marino, who played himself in the movie, said. \u201cPeople still watch it and it\u2019s amazing that [it\u2019s] actually still going.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to being beloved by fans, the 1994 comedy also is memorable to Marino\u2019s children. The former Miami Dolphins star shares six children with his wife, Claire Veazey<\/strong>, whom he\u2019s been married to since 1985. Marino joked that since his kids were young when he played football, they know more about his acting stint than his football career.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Ace Ventura<\/em>] was something they talked about sometimes,\u201d Marino said of his family\u2019s appreciation for his cameo. \u201cThat was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the film, Carrey\u2019s character is tasked with solving who stole the Miami Dolphins\u2019 mascot before the Super Bowl<\/a>. In the duo\u2019s memorable scene, Marino was tied up after being kidnapped by Lieutenant Lois Einhorn, played by Sean Young<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAce Ventura, pet detective,\u201d Carey said in the movie. \u201cI\u2019ve been sent in with a special play, the quarterback sneak.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the detective goes to free the football player, he\u2019s caught by the captor and held at gunpoint. Ace begs Lois not to kill him and offers up Marino instead. The twosome have a hilarious back-and-forth where they argue about who should be sacrificed. Ultimately, Ace exposed Lois\u2019 scheme and the athlete was free to go play in the game.<\/p>\n

Marino was in the middle of his career as the Dolphins quarterback when he made the cameo. Nearly 15 years after announcing his retirement, Marino returned to the Dolphins as a special advisor in the front office, a position he still holds.<\/p>\n

Ahead of Super Bowl LVIII<\/a>, Marino teamed up with fellow NFL legends Terrell Owens<\/strong> and Bruce Smith<\/strong> for M&M\u2019s \u201cAlmost Champions\u201d commercial, poking fun at the legends who never won a Super Bowl. In the clip, the athletes will get their own \u201calmost champion rings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I like about it is we have all the almost-champions, Bruce Smith\u2019s in it, [Terrell Owens is] in it, and it really worked out well,\u201d Marino told Us of the advertisement. \u201cAnd we make fun a little bit \u2026 The whole thing is excellent, and everybody\u2019s going to enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n
