When Melissa Barrera<\/strong> was fired from the Scream<\/em> franchise after making comments about the Israel-Hamas war, her overriding emotion was pure shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not the first person that\u2019s happened to, but it was shocking,\u201d Barrera, 33, recalled to Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> on Wednesday, January 24. \u201cI don\u2019t even know what to say. I think everything that happened was very transparent, on both sides, and I know who I am, and I know that what I said always came from a place of love and a place of humanity and a place of human rights and a place of freedom for people, which shouldn\u2019t be controversial. It shouldn\u2019t be up for debate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrera noted that she\u2019s \u201cvery at peace,\u201d and the people in her inner circle and beyond \u201cknow the truth\u201d about her and where she stands.<\/p>\n

The actress made headlines in November 2023 when it was reported that she was let go from the horror movie franchise after she posted pro-Palestine messages on her social media during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe Scream franchise won\u2019t be the same after Melissa Barrera\u2018s firing and Jenna Ortega\u2018s departure ahead of the seventh film. Before the shocking dismissal, Scream became a horror staple spanning decades. The first film, which was released in 1996, focused on Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) as she faced off against numerous killers hiding their identity [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the films, subsequently released a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpyglass\u2019 stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,\u201d their statement to Variety<\/em> read.<\/p>\n

Barrera then broke her silence<\/a>, condemning anti-semitism and Islamophobia.<\/p>\n

\u201cI condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people. As a Latina, a proud Mexicana, I feel the responsibility of having a platform that allows me the privilege of being heard,\u201d she wrote via her Instagram Story at the time, adding that she\u2019s used her platform as a way to \u201craise awareness about issues I care about and to lend my voice to those in need.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cEvery person on this earth- regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or socio-economic status- deserves equal human rights, dignity and, of course, freedom. I believe a group of people are NOT their leadership, and that no governing body should be above criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrera concluded her post by saying that she will \u201ccontinue to speak out for those that need it most\u201d as well as \u201ccontinue to advocate for peace and safety, for human rights and freedom,\u201d adding that \u201csilence is not an option for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Barrera\u2019s departure from the franchise, it was announced that her costar Jenna Ortega<\/strong> would also not be reprising her role in the movies due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix\u2019s Wednesday<\/em>.<\/p>\n
