The \u2018Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind\u2019 actor, 56, broke to the news of his potentially fatal condition to his partner Sunrise \u2018Sunny\u2019\u00a0Coigney a few days after she gave birth to their first child in 2001.<\/p>\n
He told the \u2018Smartless\u2019 podcast: \u201cWhen I told Sunny about it, at first she thought I was joking, and then she just burst into tears and said, \u2018I always knew you were gonna die young.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u2018Hulk\u2019 actor discovered he had a tumour 23 years ago when actress Sunrise, 51, was around nine-and-a-half months pregnant with her and Mark\u2019s son Keen, who is now 22 and arrived in June 2001.<\/p>\n
Mark added he made the decision to wait until after the boy\u2019s birth to break the news of his condition.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cI was just like, \u2018I can\u2019t,\u2019 she\u2019s already like, \u2018Oh God, him again, does everything gotta be about him?\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd so I just couldn\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nMark also said a week after his baby arrived he had to meet a neurologist and figure out a plan for his treatment, so he told Sunrise the night before his appointment. <\/p>\n
\nHe found out he was suffering a benign vestibular schwannoma in 2001 after he had an \u201cintense\u201d dream that he had a brain tumour.<\/p>\n
\nMark said: \u201cI woke up probably around 3am, and I just had this crazy dream, and it wasn\u2019t like any other dream I ever had.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIt was just like, you have a brain tumour, and it wasn\u2019t even a voice it was just pure knowledge \u2013 you have a brain tumour, and you have to deal with it immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMark had no symptoms except for an ear infection before the tumour was diagnosed when he went to the doctor for a CT scan.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cThe nurse calls the doctor up, I could hear them talking in the other room. She comes in, she\u2019s kinda like a zombie and she says, \u2018You have a mass behind your left ear the size of a golf ball, and we don\u2019t know what it is. We can\u2019t tell until it\u2019s biopsied.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n
\nEven though the tumour was benign, Mark had a surgery to remove the mass that left him deaf in his left ear. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201c(I am) completely deaf in one ear, and when I woke up, the left side of my face was totally paralysed. I couldn\u2019t even close my eye. I was talking out the side of my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMark\u2019s paralysis disappeared after around a year, but he still suffers hearing loss.<\/p>\n
\nAlong with Keen, the actor has two other children with Sunrise, who he married in 2000 \u2013 daughters Bella, 18, and 16-year-old Odette.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
