This has led to all manner of security flaws, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/03\/18\/study-30-of-log4shell-instances-remain-vulnerable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">such as Log4Shell<\/a> which impacted the open source Java logging framework <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Log4j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Log4j<\/a> and led to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/03\/18\/study-30-of-log4shell-instances-remain-vulnerable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaches<\/a> impacting high-profile organisations such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/11\/16\/iran-hackers-federal-agency-log4shell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Federal agency which failed to patch the bug<\/a>. In turn, this is leading to an array of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.co.uk\/issues\/cyber-security-services\/insights\/software-supply-chain-requirements-taking-shape-in-europe.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fresh regulation<\/a>, designed to strong-arm businesses into running a tighter software supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, with millions of components permeating the software supply chain, it\u2019s not always easy to know whether a given application is using a particular component. There are, of course, many software composition analysis (SCA) tools out there, <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/12\/12\/snyk-scores-another-196m-as-valuation-drops-12-to-7-4b-valuation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from Snyk<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/11\/02\/fifteen-year-old-black-duck-software-gets-its-exit-selling-to-synopsys-for-565-million\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Synopsis<\/a>, which alert companies about known vulnerabilities in their technology stack \u2014 but this can create a lot of noise, particularly if an application isn\u2019t actively using that component, thus making it difficult for security teams to prioritize the vulnerabilities that really matter.<\/p>\n<p>And this is where Danish cybersecurity startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coana.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coana<\/a> is setting out to make a difference, using \u201ccode aware\u201d SCA to help its users separate out irrelevant alerts and focus only on those that matter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2653866\" style=\"width: 543px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2653866\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2653866\" src=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Coana-Visual-5-e1705574824763.jpg\" alt=\"Coana: Example alerts\" width=\"533\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Coana-Visual-5-e1705574824763.jpg 533w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Coana-Visual-5-e1705574824763.jpg?resize=150,91 150w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Coana-Visual-5-e1705574824763.jpg?resize=300,182 300w, https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Coana-Visual-5-e1705574824763.jpg?resize=50,30 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2653866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coana: Example alerts<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Founded out of Denmark in 2021, Coana is the handiwork of a computer science professor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amoeller\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anders M\u00f8ller<\/a>) and two PhDs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/martin-torp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martin Torp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/benjamin-barslev-nielsen-510699b6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benjamin Barslev Nielsen<\/a>) who say they hit upon a \u201ctechnical breakthrough\u201d while part of a research group at Denmark\u2019s Aarhus University, discovering a new technique for analyzing and understanding large, JavaScript-based applications. CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andersslinkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anders S\u00f8ndergaard<\/a> joined the trio as co-founder in 2022, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/mequilibrium-acquires-biometrics-technology-company-resilio-301255147.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exited a previous biometrics tech startup called Resilio<\/a> the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>To help fund their company through its early-access stage to full commercialization, Coana today announced it has raised $1.6 million in a pre-seed round of funding led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Essence VC and a slew of angels including current and former executives from Google, Red Hat, and GitHub.<\/p>\n<h2>Third-party<\/h2>\n<p>A typical application can consist of as much as 90% third-party libraries, the majority of which are open source and maintained (or not) by any number of volunteer developers.<\/p>\n<p>So a company building software might build their own application layer that draws on these myriad libraries, creating a long chain of dependencies that are connected by functions. Traditionally, a SCA tool would look at the version number of a particular dependency, and map it against a database of known vulnerabilities and then report back to the developers if it finds a match. However, in many cases, an application might only use one or two functions from a library of maybe 50 \u2014 so if a vulnerability exists in a part of the library that the app never calls, it shouldn\u2019t really impact that application.<\/p>\n<p>Companies can use Coana to build what t calls a \u201ccall graph\u201d of the entire application, spanning application code and dependencies, to understand the data flow paths, and then use that to eliminate false positives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe amount of packages being used and the lines of code can be extremely high volume, so it requires some really sophisticated static analysis,\u201d S\u00f8ndergaard told TechCrunch. \u201cThe call graph enables us to do a huge analysis on all the possible paths between different dependencies. So, imagine an application consisting of hundreds or thousands of dependencies, we can identify all the paths between those dependencies to understand which ones are truly vulnerable \u2014 and which ones are not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is still very early days, of course, with Coana introducing the first iteration of its product in October for its first paying customers \u2014 a mix of Series B and Series C-stage startups and scaleups.
