Shares of Tencent and NetEase jumped on the news.<\/p>\n<p>The move follows Beijing also removing a key official \u2013 the head of the publication bureau of Communist Party\u2019s Propaganda Department \u2013 over the handling of the release of the draft rules, which caught investors and gaming giants by surprise.<\/p>\n<p>Local media reported in recent weeks \u2014 after the wipeout \u2014 that authorities may be open to walking back on some of the proposed rules.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, China\u2019s video game regulator proposed new measures to curb excessive time and money spent on computer and smartphone games.
