\u2022 The film, currently titled SNL 1975<\/i>, is set on the night SNL first went live. That first episode aired on October 11, 1975 and was “hosted” by George Carlin, who did not appear in any sketches and instead performed various mini-stand-up sets throughout the night. Janis Ian and Billy Preston were the musical guests, each performing two songs apiece. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0The screenplay is not based on the notorious oral history Live From New York<\/i> by James Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, and is instead based on “extensive” series of interviews that Reitman and his co-writer Gil Kenan conducted with the living cast, writers, and crew members who were there. <\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Gabriel LaBelle (The Fabelmans<\/i>) takes on the task of playing another<\/i> baby boomer icon: Lorne Michaels, SNLs executive producer. Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza<\/i>) is playing NBC exec Dick Ebersol. Ebersol was the VP of late-night programming at NBC, and helped Michaels develop the show. Rachel Sennott (Bottoms<\/i>) is playing Rosie Shuster, who was one of the first female writers on the show (and at that point in time she was also married to Michaels).<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Major roles left to be cast presumably include the Not Ready for Primetime Players (Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtain, Larraine Newman, and Garrett Morris), Carlin, Janis Ian, Billy Preston, prominent staff writers like Anne Beatts, Michael O’Donaghue, Al Franken and Tom Davis, and head writer Herb Sargant. Andy Kaufman, Richard Belzer (who had been hired as SNLs warm-up comedian) and Paul Simon also made appearances during that first live broadcast along with Jim Henson and Frank Oz who were there to perform and provide voices for the ugliest Muppets you’ve ever seen in your life. <\/p>\n
