Located on a high Andean plateau at 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, Bogot\u00e1<\/a> is the third-highest capital city in the world (after Quito<\/a> and La Paz). Most travelers usually bypass it in favor of the popular digital nomad hot spot of Medell\u00edn<\/a> or the coastal city of Cartegena.<\/p>\n

Most travelers think that Bogot\u00e1 is only worth spending a few days in. I think that\u2019s a shame and does this vibrant destination a disservice. I loved my time in Bogot\u00e1 and ended up extending my visit here! This city just feels more Colombian<\/em> than some of the other bigger cities that have developed a larger expat and tourist population. <\/p>\n

There is a lot to do and see here<\/a> from museums, parks, walking tours, amazing street art, great nightlife, and an incredible gastronomic scene. <\/p>\n

With that in mind, you\u2019ll want to choose where to stay in Bogot\u00e1 carefully. It\u2019s a huge city, divided into different estratos<\/em>, or zones, and there are a few \u201cno-go\u201d areas that you\u2019ll want to steer clear of as well. Bogota has a lot of petty crime so don\u2019t venture too far off the beaten path. <\/p>\n

Here is my breakdown of the best neighborhoods in Bogota for visitors (as well as suggested accommodations in each).<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best neighborhood for sightseeing?<\/strong>
If you just want to see the main tourist sites, I recommend staying in La Candelaria<\/a>, so you\u2019re within walking distance of everything. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best neighborhood for travelers on a budget?<\/strong>
La Candelaria<\/a> is also the best neighborhood for travelers on a budget. It\u2019s one of the cheapest areas of town, and with many hostels located here, it\u2019s backpacker central. Since so many of the main tourist attractions are nearby, you\u2019ll save on transportation too. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best neighborhood for digital nomads?<\/strong>
Chapinero<\/a> is the trendiest district and, while it\u2019s a bit more expensive than La Candeleria, it\u2019s great for digital nomads who want a cool place to work from.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best neighborhood for nightlife?<\/strong>
If you are staying for more than a few nights and are more interested in enjoying Bogot\u00e1\u2019s vibrant nightlife, then I recommend Zona Rosa<\/a> or Chapinero<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What are the safest areas of Bogot\u00e1? <\/strong>
Affluent Zona Rosa<\/a> and Chapinero<\/a> are both considered among the safest areas of town. La Candeleria is pretty safe during the day but you\u2019ll want to stick to the main streets at night. <\/p>\n

What\u2019s the best neighborhood overall?<\/strong>
As long as you don\u2019t mind traveling a bit to some of the main sights, Chapinero<\/a> is the best area to stay in, due to its cool vibe, great restaurants, fantastic nightlife, and ample accommodation options.<\/p>\n
