{"id":6940,"date":"2023-02-24T07:43:50","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T07:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/24\/amazon-joins-india-backed-e-commerce-initiative-thats-seeking-to-challenge-the-retail-giant\/"},"modified":"2023-02-24T07:43:50","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T07:43:50","slug":"amazon-joins-india-backed-e-commerce-initiative-thats-seeking-to-challenge-the-retail-giant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/02\/24\/amazon-joins-india-backed-e-commerce-initiative-thats-seeking-to-challenge-the-retail-giant\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon joins India-backed e-commerce initiative that&#8217;s seeking to challenge the retail giant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<div class=\"article__featured-image-wrapper breakout\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p id=\"speakable-summary\">Amazon is joining the Indian government-backed e-commerce initiative that seeks to \u201cdemocratize\u201d online shopping in the South Asian market and amusingly challenge the very dominance of companies such as the American retail group.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Friday, Amazon said it will integrate its logistics network and SmartCommerce, its <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/05\/18\/amazon-smart-commerce-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">platform to digitize neighborhood stores<\/a>, to Open Network for Digital Commerce, a non-profit firm set up by India\u2019s commerce ministry in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon\u2019s vision and commitment for India is closely aligned with ONDC\u2019s objectives of digitally enabling small businesses, and providing convenience and choice to customers across the country,\u201d said Manish Tiwary, country manager for Amazon India, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s participation in the initiative, backed by the Indian government, is remarkable because part of the ONDC pitch to date has been that it seeks to disrupt the monopoly of Amazon and Walmart\u2019s Flipkart in the Indian e-commerce market.<\/p>\n<p>ONDC is an \u201cinteroperable\u201d network, where buyers and sellers can do business regardless of the app or services they use, disrupting the consumers\u2019 reliance on using proprietary services run by Amazon and Walmart.<\/p>\n<p>With ONDC, New Delhi is seeking to replicate the success it has had with UPI, the interoperable mobile payments network, that disrupted the walled-garden mobile wallets from firms such as Paytm and MobiKwik. Paytm is a participant in the ONDC network.<\/p>\n<p>And while it\u2019s the early days of ONDC, the model has many things left to be ironed out, industry executives say.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear who bears the responsibility if a customer doesn\u2019t get their order delivered, for instance.
