Owner Cond\u00e9 Nast has decided to merge the music magazine with <em>GQ<\/em>, the men\u2019s interest publication, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maxwelltani\/status\/1747693175886533044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staff memo<\/a> circulated by Max Tani of <em>Semafor<\/em>. Launched back when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/4\/15\/8419567\/digital-physical-music-sales-overtake-globally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDs were a thing<\/a>, <em>Pitchfork<\/em> outlasted the age of music piracy and mp3s and through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/1\/20\/22892939\/music-streaming-services-market-share-q2-2021-spotify-apple-amazon-tencent-youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rise of digital streaming<\/a>. Its future as a brand post-merge is now uncertain. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Multiple employees were also laid off on Wednesday, including editor-in-chief Puja Patel. The magazine\u2019s masthead lists 19 full-time\u00a0 editorial employees, as well as separate teams for social media and audience development, events, video, and communications. Pitchfork also employs a team of contributing writers and editors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><em>Pitchfork <\/em>was a huge cultural force in the early blog era at the start of the 2000s, with its influential <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/lists-and-guides\/5934-top-50-albums-of-2004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">best songs and albums rankings<\/a> and its exhaustive (and sometimes even <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/culture\/2018\/05\/when-a-negative-pitchfork-review-could-end-a-career.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">career-ending<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/lists-and-guides\/the-history-of-the-pitchfork-reviews-section-in-38-important-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music criticism<\/a>. It was first launched by Ryan Schreiber as a daily news music blog in 1996, the same year that <em>The New York Times<\/em> launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1996\/01\/22\/business\/the-new-york-times-introduces-a-web-site.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">own website<\/a> and while legendary music magazines like <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> and<em> Spin<\/em> lacked a digital presence completely.
