Lorne Michaels<\/strong><\/a> has some ideas on who could become his Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a> successor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could easily be Tina Fey<\/strong><\/a>, but you know, there are a lot of people who are there now,\u201d Michaels, 79, told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Tuesday, January 16, hinting that there are multiple candidates who could take the reins.<\/p>\n

Still, Michaels noted that Fey, 53, would be someone he could trust with the NBC sketch series, as she\u2019s \u201cbrilliant\u201d and \u201cgreat\u201d at everything she does. \u201cShe\u2019s a very important person in my life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Michaels co-created SNL<\/em> in 1975, serving as writer, producer, and executive producer for more than 40 years with the reception of a five-year hiatus in the 1980s. Fey, meanwhile, joined the show in 1997 as a writer before being promoted to head writer two years later. In 2000, she joined the cast as co-anchor for the \u201cWeekend Update\u201d segment during season 26 alongside Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> and later Amy Poehler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNo longer live from New York! Saturday Night Live has catapulted the careers of many of today\u2019s most popular comedians, including Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey and Adam Sandler. In fact, the NBC sketch comedy series has become a launching pad for hit talk shows, films, sitcoms and game shows since its 1975 premiere. [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fey ultimately exited the series in 2006 to write and star in NBC\u2019s 30 Rock,<\/em> which parodied the SNL<\/em> office and was also executive-produced by Michaels.<\/p>\n

Since her departure, Michaels and Fey have continued their working relationship. Michaels has executive produced a handful of Fey\u2019s projects including 2004 Mean Girls<\/em>, the 2024 Mean Girls<\/em> movie musical and Mean Girls<\/em> on Broadway.<\/p>\n

While speaking with ET<\/em>, Michaels confirmed that despite considering who may take his place in the future, he\u2019ll remain with Saturday Night Live<\/em> at least through the show\u2019s 50th anniversary, which occurs in February 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will definitely be there for that, and definitely be there until that,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd sometime before that we\u2019ll figure out what we\u2019re gonna do.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Michaels has opened up about possibly stepping down from his role at SNL<\/em>. In 2021, he told CBS Mornings<\/em><\/a> that he was\u00a0 \u201ccommitted to doing [SNL] until its 50th anniversary,\u201d something that he would like to \u201csee through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a feeling that\u2019d be a really good time to leave<\/a>,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut here\u2019s the point: I won\u2019t want the show ever to be bad. I care too deeply about it. It\u2019s been my life\u2019s work. So I\u2019m gonna do everything I can to see it carry on and carry on well.\u201d<\/p>\n
