Does Nikki Haley<\/strong><\/a> think minimizing the United States\u2019s history when it comes to slavery and racism is the key to winning the GOP presidential nomination? It kind of seems like it!<\/p>\n Following up her curious decision last month to not cite slavery as a cause of the Civil War\u2014which she later defended by saying<\/a>, among other things, \u201cI had Black friends growing up\u201d\u2014the former South Carolina governor declared<\/a> on Tuesday that the United States, where owning a Black person was once legal, has \u201cnever\u201d been a racist country. That\u2019s right, never been racist, including the period in which it was acceptable for Black people to be someone\u2019s property.<\/p>\n Haley\u2019s claim came in response to a question from Fox & Friends<\/em> cohost\u00a0Brian Kilmeade,<\/strong> who asked the candidate\u00a0if she thinks the GOP is a \u201cracist party.\u201d Her full answer was \u201cNo. We\u2019re not a racist country, Brian.\u00a0We\u2019ve never been a racist country.\u201d She added: \u201cOur goal is to make sure that today is better than yesterday,\u201d she continued. \u201cAre we perfect?\u00a0No. But our goal is to always make sure we try and be more perfect every day that we can.\u201d<\/p>\n This content can also be viewed on the site it originates<\/a> from.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n While maintaining that America has \u201cnever,\u201d ever, been a racist country, Haley also told Kilmeade, \u201cI faced racism when I was growing up. But I can tell you, today is a lot better than it was then.\u201d She added: \u201cI don\u2019t want my kids growing up where they\u2019re sitting there thinking that they\u2019re disadvantaged because of a color or a gender.
