Chelsea Handler<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s opening monologue at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards<\/a> brought the jokes \u2014 and ex-boyfriend Jo Koy<\/strong><\/a> wasn\u2019t spared following his recent Golden Globes drama.<\/p>\n

Handler, 48, subtly poked fun at Koy, 52, as she opened the show at Santa Barbara\u2019s Barker Hangar on Sunday, January 14. After making a quip that got quite a few chuckles from the audience, Handler said, \u201cThank you for laughing at that. My writer\u2019s wrote it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koy notably blamed his writers when he didn\u2019t get laughs during his Golden Globes monologue. \u201cSome I wrote, some other people wrote,\u201d he said during the January 7 show. \u201cYo, I got the gig 10 days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Shut up! You\u2019re kidding me, right? I wrote some of these, and they\u2019re the ones you\u2019re laughing at.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comic later said he regretted placing blame.\u201dThere\u2019s a lot of greats that make rookie moves, and that was a rookie move,\u201d he told the Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThose writers are dope, and that was not my intention at all. They were amazing, they had my back, and I need to make sure I fix that, and I will, I always will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Handler and Koy dated for one year between September 2021 and June 2022.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tComedians in love? Chelsea Handler knew Jo Koy\u00a0for nearly 20 years before they started dating \u2014 but their romance happened right on time. During an October 2021 episode of her \u201cDear Chelsea\u201d podcast, Handler admitted that she may have had feelings for Koy when he was a regular guest on her late-night talk show, Chelsea [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt is with a heavy heart to announce that we have decided together that it is best for us to take a break from our relationship right now,\u201d Handler wrote via Instagram<\/a> one month later in July 2022. \u201cI know many of you were invested in our love, and I wanted to express to you how much that meant to both of us. How much it still means. And how much I now believe in love for each of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weeks later, Handler went on the \u201cWe Can Do Hard Things With Glenn Doyle\u201d podcast and said that they reached a crossroads in their relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love him, and he\u2019s on his own path. If I have to choose one person, I have to choose myself,\u201d she explained. \u201cNo one cheated or anything like that. It just didn\u2019t work out<\/a>. I did everything I could to make it work, but it didn\u2019t work out. I wanted to make sure that everybody knew that this is a different me. This is the first time that I\u2019ve ended a relationship where I\u2019ve felt like an adult.\u201d<\/p>\n

As both comedians eventually moved on, they each landed hosting gigs this awards season. While Handler was back at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday for the second consecutive year, Koy hosted the Golden Globes for the first time on January 7.<\/p>\n

In Koy\u2019s opening monologue, he made several jokes that bombed<\/a> in front of the star-studded crowd and the TV audience. After remarking that Barbie <\/i>was based on a \u201cdoll with big boobies\u201d \u2014 despite America Ferrera<\/strong>\u2019s character\u2019s impactful monologue in the movie disputing just that \u2014 he took aim at nominee Taylor Swift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
