A few doctors from Grey Sloan Memorial are about to have a long-awaited reunion.<\/p>\n

Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em><\/a> alums Katherine Heigl<\/strong><\/a> and Justin Chambers<\/strong><\/a>, who played Izzie Stephens and Alex Karev, respectively, on the ABC series, are set to make an appearance at the 2023 Emmy Awards<\/a> alongside their former castmates. The duo will take the stage during the Monday, January 15, ceremony alongside Ellen Pompeo<\/strong> (Meredith Grey), James Pickens Jr.<\/strong> (Richard Webber) and Chandra Wilson<\/strong> (Miranda Bailey), to announce one of the night\u2019s major categories.<\/p>\n

The medical drama won\u2019t be the only iconic show linking back up at the 75th annual awards show, which will take place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Other notable actors from iconic shows reuniting on stage include: Lorraine Bracco<\/strong> and Michael Imperioli<\/strong> from The Sopranos<\/em><\/a>, Martin Lawrence<\/strong>, Tisha Campbell<\/strong>, Carl Anthony Payne II<\/strong> and Tichina Arnold<\/strong> from Martin<\/em>, Calista Flockhart<\/strong>, Greg Germann<\/strong>, Peter MacNicol<\/strong> and Gil Bellows<\/strong> from Ally McBeal<\/em>, Tina Fey<\/strong> and Amy Poehler<\/strong> from Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a>, Connie Britton<\/strong> and Dylan McDermott<\/strong> from American Horror Story: Murder House<\/em><\/a> and Ted Danson<\/strong>, Kelsey Grammer<\/strong>, Rhea Perlman,<\/strong> John Ratzenberger<\/strong> and George Wendt<\/strong> from Cheers<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was really about, how can we celebrate 75 years of television differently?\u201d Emmys executive producer Jesse Collins<\/strong> told The Associated Press<\/em> <\/a>earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe night \u2026 was March 27, 2005. Television titan Shonda Rhimes knew what she had just created \u2014 but audiences still had no idea. The Grey\u2019s Anatomy pilot introduced several characters, including the show\u2019s protagonist, legacy surgical resident Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). Spunky, undoubtedly intelligent and full of heart, the show wouldn\u2019t survive without its [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fans have been wanting Heigl 45, and Chambers, 53 \u2014 who played love interests on the show \u2014 to reunite since Heigl abruptly exited the series during season six in 2010. Her departure came after Heigl publicly feuded with series creator Shonda Rhimes.<\/p>\n

In November 2020, Krista Vernoff<\/strong>, who worked on seasons 1 through of Grey\u2019s<\/em> before returning as the showrunner for season 14, told the Los Angeles Times<\/em> that there was a plan to wrap up Izzie\u2019s arc in a different way.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe 75th Annual Emmy Awards will not take place in September 2023 as originally planned \u2014 but the show will go on! The Television Academy announced in August 2023 that this year\u2019s\u00a0Emmys are now set to air in January 2024 because actors, writers and other entertainment workers continue to strike. Both the Writers Guild of [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere was a resolution to Izzie\u2019s story. We had planned to have her come back for an episode to really properly tie up Izzie and Alex,\u201d she explained to the outlet. \u201cAnd I wrote that episode, and it was beautiful. The day before it was supposed to start prepping or shooting, I can\u2019t remember, we got a call that Katie wasn\u2019t coming. Just wasn\u2019t coming. Wasn\u2019t going to do it. It became my job to stay up all night for multiple nights and reimagine a script that didn\u2019t include Izzie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vernoff added: \u201cAnd for years and years and years and years and years, the fans scream at us, \u2018How could you?\u2019 Well, that\u2019s the behind-the-scenes story. That\u2019s what happened. I\u2019m not saying that to bash Katie. I don\u2019t know what was happening in her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sources close to Heigl, however, rebutted Vernoff\u2019s claims at the time, sharing that the showrunner was \u201cmistaken\u201d when recalling her departure from the series. \u201cKatherine was back in L.A. after parental leave (when she adopted her daughter) waiting to be called to set,\u201d the insider told Us Weekly<\/em> at the time.<\/p>\n

Chambers, meanwhile, remained on the series until season 16. After his exit, it was revealed that his character left his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington<\/strong>), to reunite offscreen with Heigl\u2019s Izzie. Heigl later reacted to the news of the plot twist, telling Entertainment Tonight, \u201cI didn\u2019t see it. \u2026 Wasn\u2019t he with someone? Listen, isn\u2019t that an a\u2013hole move? I\u2019m sorry!\u201d<\/p>\n
