{"id":67849,"date":"2024-01-10T07:01:34","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T07:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/10\/barry-keoghan-battled-near-fatal-flesh-eating-disease-just-before-breakthrough-role\/"},"modified":"2024-01-10T07:01:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T07:01:34","slug":"barry-keoghan-battled-near-fatal-flesh-eating-disease-just-before-breakthrough-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/entertainment.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2024\/01\/10\/barry-keoghan-battled-near-fatal-flesh-eating-disease-just-before-breakthrough-role\/","title":{"rendered":"Barry Keoghan battled near fatal flesh eating disease just before breakthrough role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"byline\">\n<time itemprop=\"datePublished\" content=\"2024-01-10\" datetime=\"1704870094\" pubdate=\"\">10 January 2024<\/time>\n<\/p>\n<p>Barry Keoghan was diagnosed with a rare flesh-eating disease just before his breakthrough film role.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"image-caption landscape\">Barry Keoghan battled a flesh eating disease before breakthrough role<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old actor &#8211; who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in &#8216;The Banshees of Inisherin&#8217; &#8211; has revealed he battled necrotising fasciitis in 2021, and almost lost his arm as well as his life.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to GQ magazine, he revealed he nearly lost his arm to the disease, while he recalled asking doctors if he was going to die.<\/p>\n<p>They told him: &#8220;Well, we don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One in five cases of the illness are fatal, and amputation was a possibility for Barry, who has a scar running up his arm from the health scare.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe NHS describes the flesh-eating disease as a &#8220;rare and life-threatening infection that can happen if a wound gets infected&#8221;, noting that &#8220;it needs to be treated in hospital straight away&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\nHe was visited by &#8216;The Banshees of Inisherin&#8217; director Martin McDonagh just before filming was set to get underway on the 2022 comedy drama.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe filmmaker said: \u201cI\u2019m not sure if he was on a lot of meds, but he seemed to shrug it off.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe were only about four days out from shooting, and his arm was puffed up. But he was like, \u2018Yeah, no, I\u2019m going to be fine\u2014I\u2019ll see you on Tuesday.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;I went to the hospital thinking &#8230; Is he going to die? Let alone, is he going to make the movie.
