Steve Martin<\/strong><\/a> knows that better than anyone that hosting isn\u2019t for the faint of heart, so he\u2019s cutting Jo Koy<\/strong><\/a> some slack after the 2024 Golden Globes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tip my hat to anyone who steps out on stage to host a live awards show,\u201d Martin, 78, wrote via Threads<\/a> on Tuesday, January 9. \u201cIt\u2019s a very difficult job and not for the squeamish. I know because I\u2019m still throwing up from the last time I did it in 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Only Murders in the Building<\/em> star added: \u201cSo, Congratulations to Jo Koy, who took on the toughest gig in show business, hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has twenty minutes of new material for his stand up!\u201d<\/p>\n

Martin hosted the Academy Awards<\/a> solo in both 2001 and 2003. He returned in 2010 to cohost the Oscars with Alec Baldwin<\/strong>. Koy, meanwhile, made his hosting debut on Sunday, January 7, with the 81st annual Golden Globes.<\/p>\n

The comedian, 52, took the stage on Sunday, January 7, after a lengthy search for a host. Koy followed in the footsteps of other comedians including Jerrod Carmichael, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many of his opening monologue jokes fell flat, which Koy, 52, quickly addressed. \u201cI got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cI wrote some of these, and they\u2019re the ones you\u2019re laughing at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Koy left guests and viewers at home speechless when he poked fun at Barbie<\/em> and seemed to completely miss the movie\u2019s empowering message of female progression. \u201cOppenheimer<\/em> is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project, and Barbie<\/em> is based on a plastic doll with big boobies,\u201d the comedian said.<\/p>\n

Barbie<\/em> director Greta Gerwig<\/strong> addressed the awkward joke<\/a> during an appearance on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today<\/em>, saying, \u201cWell, he\u2019s not wrong. She\u2019s the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts, so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely because it is about a plastic doll.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the awards show, Koy also made a dig at Taylor Swift<\/strong>,<\/a> who lost to Barbie<\/em><\/a> in the Cinematic Box Office Achievement category for her Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour<\/em> film.<\/p>\n

Although Swift has yet to publicly address her now-viral reaction, Koy has spoken out about his joke<\/a>. \u201cIt was a compliment,\u201d Koy told Extra<\/em> after the awards show, noting that he meant Swift \u201ccould be more intimate tonight, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n
