The program is currently only funded through April this year, despite a White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/build\/resources\/affordable-connectivity-program-enrollment-fact-sheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">push for a $6 billion extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/09\/tech\/us-lawmakers-propose-usd7-billion-extension-for-expiring-federal-internet-discounts\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>CNN <\/em>reports<\/a> that today, a bipartisan group of lawmakers in both the House and Senate plan to submit a bill requesting its extension. The extension bill, reportedly called the Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act, will be introduced in Congress tomorrow to provide a $7 billion extension for the program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">But the bill will have to overcome objections from Republicans in the House and Senate with oversight of the ACP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thune.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2023\/12\/thune-cruz-mcmorris-rodgers-latta-raise-serious-concerns-about-the-fcc-s-management-of-the-acp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who say<\/a> the agency hasn\u2019t fulfilled its obligation to report statistics about who has signed up for the program, including who had no internet access prior to signing up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-399616A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FCC wrote<\/a> that \u201cnearly 23 million households\u201d have enrolled in the program, which involves 1,700 internet providers. The agency also pointed out that \u201crural households have enrolled at a higher rate\u201d than those in urban areas. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The Affordable Connectivity Program launched in 2021 as part of the Biden administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/11\/15\/22783684\/biden-infrastructure-bill-bipartisan-broadband-ev-electrical-grid-climate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infrastructure bill<\/a>. Qualifying households can get a $30 monthly subsidy toward internet service (up to $75 for certain households on tribal lands) and as much as $100 in discounts on computer hardware. Programs aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/8\/21\/23837593\/biden-broadband-usda-reconnect-internet-rural-farms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding broadband internet access<\/a> have been a thrust of Biden\u2019s agenda since he took office.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-399614A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in a letter to Congress that \u201cmillions of households\u201d would lose the $30-a-month subsidy if funding isn\u2019t approved before April. As <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2024\/01\/fcc-to-halt-sign-ups-for-internet-discounts-as-republicans-threaten-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ArsTechnica <\/em>noted<\/a>, Republican lawmakers who oppose the program called it \u201cwasteful\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thune.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/2023\/12\/thune-cruz-mcmorris-rodgers-latta-raise-serious-concerns-about-the-fcc-s-management-of-the-acp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous letter to the FCC<\/a> last month. They asserted that \u201cthe vast majority of tax dollars have gone to households that already had broadband\u201d as proof the program is unjustified, saying that the households that would lose the subsidy would still keep their internet access.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Despite those claims, there\u2019s still an apparent need for the program.
