To each their own. Jeremy Strong<\/strong><\/a> raised eyebrows with his commitment to method acting \u2014 and not all of his Succession<\/em><\/a> costars have been onboard with the process.<\/p>\n The hit HBO series, which premiered in 2018, centers on a wealthy family as they fight for control of their father\u2019s company<\/a> amid his declining health. Strong, who brings Logan\u2019s (Brian Cox<\/strong><\/a>) heirs apparent Kendall to life, surprised viewers when his commitment to the role was the focus<\/a> of a profile for the New Yorker.<\/p>\n In the December 2021 article, quotes from those who spent time with the Massachusetts native recalled him sustaining injuries while working on Succession<\/em><\/a>. The health scares included hurting his tibia, femur and fracturing his foot<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIf I have any method at all, it is simply this: to clear away anything \u2014 anything \u2014 that is not the character and the circumstances of the scene,\u201d Strong explained in the feature at the time. \u201cAnd usually that means clearing away almost everything around and inside you, so that you can be a more complete vessel for the work at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n The Golden Globe winner\u2019s costars, however, didn\u2019t seem thrilled by Strong\u2019s behavior when cameras weren\u2019t rolling<\/a>. In response, Strong noted that his method may come off as \u201cdifficult\u201d to others<\/a>, saying, \u201cSometimes there must even be room for necessary roughness.\u201d<\/p>\n That same month, Cox expressed concern that Strong was overworking himself.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThe thing about Jeremy\u2019s approach is it works in terms of what comes out the other end,\u201d the U.K. native detailed during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers<\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t have a problem with Jeremy because he\u2019s delightful. \u2026 He\u2019s an extraordinary dad. He\u2019s a pretty unique individual. But he does get obsessed with the work. And I worry about what it does to him, because if you can\u2019t separate yourself \u2014 because you\u2019re dealing with all of this material every day. You can\u2019t live in it. Eventually, you get worn out.\u201d<\/p>\n Cox continued: \u201cLike, to me, Daniel Day Lewis<\/strong><\/a> got worn out at 55 and decided to retire because [he] couldn\u2019t go on doing that<\/a> every day. It\u2019s too consuming. And I do worry about it. But the result \u2014 what everyone says about Jeremy \u2014 the result is always extraordinary and excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n The Parkland star, for his part, received support from several friends<\/a> amid the drama. \u201cIve known Jeremy Strong for 20yrs & worked with him on 2 films. Hes a lovely person. Very inspiring & passionate about his work,\u201d Jessica Chastain<\/strong><\/a> tweeted in December 2021.<\/p>\n Following backlash, Strong called the profile a \u201cpretty profound betrayal\u201d of his trust<\/a>. \u201cIt was painful. I felt foolish. As an actor, one of the most vital secret weapons that you can have is the ability to tolerate feeling foolish,\u201d he shared with Vanity Fair<\/em> in September 2022.<\/p>\n The Selma<\/em> star admitted that comments from his costars about his preference for method acting hurt his feelings.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cA lot of that is just things that are presented out of context or with a certain agenda,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> that same month. \u201cI know what everybody said, and there was an angle and a narrative that was being presented. Which is not to say that there was never friction between my costars. We\u2019re a family in every sense of the word. But foundationally, there\u2019s deep respect and even love.\u201d<\/p>\n In February 2023, Strong pushed back against Cox\u2019s public comments about how there is a \u201ccertain amount of pain\u201d behind his performance. \u201cI don\u2019t think there is. There\u2019s certainly a lot of pain in Kendall, and I haven\u2019t really met Brian outside of the confines of that,\u201d he detailed to GQ<\/em>.<\/p>\n
