Kate Hudson<\/strong><\/a> is extending an invitation to male actors in the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,\u201d Hudson, 44, said on the Thursday, January 4, episode of The View<\/em><\/a>, noting that the genre needs more \u201cMarvel guys\u201d to sign up for roles.<\/p>\n

When cohost Sara Haines<\/strong> asked Hudson about the \u201cmisstep\u201d between male actors and the romantic comedy appeal, Hudson replied, \u201cI think it\u2019s about the writing, and how we\u2019re investing in telling the story of the writing and the directors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson added that if \u201cyou look at the classic rom-coms or movies that last forever,\u201d those films \u201chad the best writers,\u201d naming the late Nora Ephron<\/strong> as an example. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s more about how the studios are investing in the talents,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

When Hudson was asked why she thinks her beloved 2003 film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days<\/em><\/a> with Matthew McConaughey<\/strong> still resonates with people today, she credited the script.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I think it was well-written. I think there\u2019s this sort of misconception that a rom-com is supposed to have a certain formula \u2014 which it does, there is a formula that works,\u201d she said. \u201cBut it does also start with the writing.\u201d<\/p>\n

For How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days<\/em>, Hudson said they went through \u201cmultiple writers\u201d before settling on Kristen Buckley<\/strong>, Brian Regan<\/strong> and Burr Steers<\/strong>, and \u201creally made sure we had a great foundation of a script, and then the cast.\u201d (The movie is based on a novel written by Michele Alexander<\/strong> and Jeannie Long<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n

When cohost Sunny Hosin<\/strong> noted that \u201cthe cast was pretty good,\u201d Hudson added with a laugh, \u201cWe like that McConaughey!\u201d<\/p>\n

McConaughey, 54, was known for his roles in various \u201890s and early 2000s romantic comedies, including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days<\/em>, The Wedding Planner<\/em> and more. The Oscar winner previously gave behind-the-scenes insight<\/a> into the genre in 2020, noting the importance of chemistry between a film\u2019s leads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of improv, there\u2019s a lot of banter. It\u2019s about timing, comedic timing,\u201d he explained in a video shared to X (formerly Twitter) at the time. \u201cThere\u2019s a buoyancy that they\u2019re built on, you have to sort of bounce from cloud to cloud.
