After sitting down to play, Shawn Mendes<\/strong><\/a> opened up about the struggle of being \u201cperfect\u201d when making music.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last year, I spent a lot of time singing like this,\u201d Mendes, 25, captioned the black and white Instagram <\/a>video he posted on Tuesday, January 2. The video saw the \u201cStitches\u201d musician singing along to the trance-like music coming from the instrument. In the video, Mendes, sporting a scruffy face and tousled hair, said that in \u201cmoments of extreme anxiety or fear, if I sat down with my harmonium and allowed myself with full trust to sing whatever came out, it would often ease the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt so difficult at first to let myself sing without needing perfection, but after a while, I actually started to fall in love with the dance between the \u2018right\u2019 and the \u2018wrong\u2019 notes,\u201d he continued. \u201cI realized there were only moments of bliss and euphoria from the \u2018right\u2019 notes BECAUSE of the \u2018wrong\u2019 notes. The only reason I can sing in key is because I\u2019ve learned to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n

During this improvisational moment, Mendes sang, \u201cYou were right there for me \u2026 to help me out.\u201d He added that the biggest takeaway from 2023 was that he\u2019s \u201cbeen to accept and welcome the lows of life\u2026 not to constantly need to change or fix something in order to feel high again, because I know if I really slow down and listen when I\u2019m low, there\u2019s always something to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes has been open about his struggles<\/a> with maintaining his mental health. In July 2022, he first postponed a string of dates<\/a> of his Wonder tour to deal with the \u201ctoll of the road\u201d after \u201cthe pressures [had] caught up to me.\u201d Mendes said that though he was excited to get back on the road after being sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic, he had reached \u201ca breaking point\u201d from being away from friends and family. He postponed the shows to \u201ctake some time to heal and take care of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, he ultimately canceled the rest of the tour<\/a>. Mendes said he was \u201cexcited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.\u201d Mendes said he needed to \u201cput my health as my first priority,\u201d and that\u2019s why he had to cancel the tour.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis doesn\u2019t mean I won\u2019t be making new music,\u201d he clarified. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t wait to see you on tour in the future.\u201d Mendes said he would \u201cback as soon as I\u2019ve taken the right time to heal\u201d while thanking those supporting him on this journey.<\/p>\n
