It\u2019s \u201cnew year, new Nicki Minaj<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d so she\u2019s retiring one of her earliest hit songs and focusing on the future.<\/p>\n

On New Year\u2019s Eve, Minaj, 41, performed<\/a> at Miami\u2019s E11EVEN. During the event, she began to play \u201cStarships,\u201d the lead single from her massive 2012 album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded<\/em>. Along with \u201cSuper Bass,\u201d it\u2019s one of the songs that put Minaj on the map early on in her career, and the Barbz in attendance knew it well. As they began to sing along, Minaj paused and watched in slight amazement before waving her hand to the DJ.<\/p>\n

\u201cHold on,\u201d she said, cutting off the song. \u201cPsych. Psych. Psych. Psych.\u201d Minaj turned around and looked apologetic as a chorus of boos sounded. \u201cI don\u2019t perform that song no more, y\u2019all.\u201d As the Barbz continued to boo her, Minaj said, \u201cI don\u2019t like it! What do you want me to do?\u201d She then dubbed it a \u201cstupid song\u201d before flashing a smile and continuing with the show.<\/p>\n

Minaj cowrote \u201cStarships\u201d with Nadir \u201cRedOne\u201d Khayat<\/strong>, Carl Falk<\/strong>, Rami Yacoub<\/strong>, Wayne Hector<\/strong> and Bilal \u201cThe Chef\u201d Hajji<\/strong>. Released in February 2012, the song debuted at No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 before reaching the No. 5 spot. Coming nearly a year after the success of Minaj\u2019s \u201cSuper Bass,\u201d \u201cStarships\u201d blended dance-pop and hip-hop to further Minaj\u2019s crossover appeal. \u201cStarships\u201d reached the Top 5 in numerous countries, and as of 2024, it\u2019s gone platinum nine times in the USA.<\/p>\n

The rapper raised eyebrows when she went public with\u00a0Kenneth \u201cZoo\u201d Petty, who is a registered sex offender, in December 2018. Since then, the couple have been unfazed by the backlash surrounding their whirlwind romance. They tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed their son, whose [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite this commercial success, Minaj has publicly distanced herself<\/a> from the song. During the 2020 Pollstar Live Conference in Los Angeles, Minaj said that she regretted making \u201cso much of my discography. Minaj released Pink Friday 2<\/em>, her fifth studio album, in December 2023. During the album\u2019s rollout, Minaj was open about how she\u2019s changed and grown<\/a> since breaking out on the music scene with \u201cSuper Bass\u201d and \u201cStarships.\u201d In November 2023, she openly regretted getting plastic surgery<\/a>, saying that she was \u201cjust fine the way I was.\u201d That same month, she told the notoriously aggressive Barbz<\/a> to \u201cnever threaten anyone on my behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n
