\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Fantasia Barrino<\/strong><\/a> is sharing how she really felt about playing the lead role of Celie in The Color Purple<\/strong><\/a><\/em> on Broadway. <\/p>\n The 39-year-old American Idol<\/strong><\/a><\/em> winner earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in The Color Purple<\/em> movie musical, but has struggled emotionally with portraying the character.<\/p>\n During an interview with People<\/a><\/em>, she said that she almost declined the offer to play Celie in film because she had such a hard time doing the show. <\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI hated it,\u201d Fantasia <\/strong>said about being in the musical on Broadway. \u201cThat was around the time that my life was so crazy, so it was almost like carrying my cross and Celie\u2019s cross. I didn\u2019t know how to come out of the character.\u201d<\/p>\n She explained that because she\u2019s been sexually assaulted before, it was challenging to play a character who shared that traumatic experience. <\/p>\n Not to mention, she encountered a serious health issue right after the show ended. \u201cI had to have surgery to remove two tumors on my vocal cords,\u201d Fantasia <\/strong>told the magazine.<\/p>\n So when she was contacted about the movie, the singer thought, \u201cI\u2019m not sure if I can do it or if I want to.\u201d However, she decided to sign on after learning about director Blitz Bazawule<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s approach to her character. <\/p>\n \u201cHe showed me he was giving Celie an imagination this go-round for audiences to see how she got through,\u201d she said. \u201cI was all in.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course, working on the film was still tough. At the time, Fantasia <\/strong>had just started trauma therapy. She explained, \u201cThey go back into your childhood and start to help you heal things you\u2019ve either forgotten or suppressed that are hindering you from adulthood. I had to stop therapy and allow Celie to be my life coach.\u201d<\/p>\n Fantasia <\/strong>recently discussed losing \u201ceverything\u201d<\/a> after her American Idol<\/em> win. <\/p>\n <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
